And that's basically how the found family turned into a real one.
For the record, I didn't like it. Mostly because I didn't care for the idea of having brothers that I'd slept with any more than I liked the idea of sharing my mom with anyone now that I'd just gotten her back.
But that was the whole nature of the matter. She existed in the world with the rest of us, which meant that I needed to share her. I needed to share her with Demon and Elias, who were now legally her dependants. I needed to share her with Aizawa and Emi, all of whom became quick friends. I needed to share her with Momo's parents, because they were making up for lost time.
I needed to share her with Melanie, who had lost a mom more than I had.
It was such a bitch and a half tracking her down the second time. Hawks was, predictably, unwilling to help and was of little help once it was clear I wasn't leaving. And, you know, it probably didn't help that I ended that meeting with a request that he unban Kiri from the agency.
When that meeting ended, I was banned too. I thought it might soften the blow of having had Kiri banned, but he didn't seem to see it that way.
As usual, it was Elias who saved the day. He ended up making a device that hacked into the city's security cameras and would alert us if anyone within a 50% match of her face was picked up on any of them. It got me what I wanted, but still.
"You're so creepy," I told him. "Does your teacher know you're using UA resources to do this stalker shit?"
"UA resources?" he asked, blue eyes widening ever so slightly. "This is a personal side project, and quite a simple one at that."
"Doesn't make it less creepy," I said. If anything, it made it creepier.
"It's effective regardless of what you think about it," he said. "It helped me find you, after all."
"I hate you."
"I'll follow her and send you the coordinates," he said. "You'd better head out."
"I'm not saying thank you," I said on my way out.
"You're welcome," he said anyways.
Our reunion was less than sisterly. It was pretty awful, actually. She pulled her whole villain shtick. I pulled my whole bitch who doesn't care for not being listened to thing. Not to mention I was still kind of pissed about her ditching me after I asked (blackmailed) her for her help. I actually ended up knocking her out and calling Jojo to bring the car around and we brought her back that way. Not the best way to go about it, I will admit. But when you're dealing with a villain, you have to act like a villain? Or something. Anyways, it got the job done, so, you know. Shut up.
And they did have a really great mother daughter reunion. Crying, hugs, the whole thing. Exactly what we had, except they had the history to pull on and remember. Actually, I didn't even see either of them for the rest of the day, and horribly jealous as I was, I think it was for the best.
Melanie and I eventually did come around to each other too. It was weird. It was always going to be. There was so much time and history and deviation between the two of us, it's more than understandable that we had a hard time making sense of each other. We didn't know how to talk to each other without turning our words into weapons, even when we weren't trying to.
But one day she asked me, "Do you still like movies?"
What a horribly complicated and sentimental moment that was for me. Melanie was the whole reason I even liked movies in the first place, the way I compared my whole life to them. Back when I was paralyzed, before I'd learned how to use my quirk to my advantage, movies and my sister were the two things that I could rely on to break up my day. I couldn't move, couldn't walk, couldn't eat by myself, could barely even speak, but other that nurses and a seemingly endless white ceiling, but I'd had Melanie and movies. We had found our bridge, and I was running across it. She had reached out an olive branch, and I was holding onto it for dear life.
