You cling on to the piece of driftwood, praying to see the rising sun rippling off the foamy waters. The merchant ship you were working on had crashed and wrecked on some rocks, most definitely not at the intended destination of Gulltown. You shiver, the air growing colder and colder on your exposed skin.
You hadn't seen land or ships for a while now, and after some very vigorous swimming you were too tired to continue. Thankfully you hitched a ride on a piece of driftwood, but still, your exhaustion was evident and you noticed your grip loosening.
Shifting your weight, you squint into the darkness as all of a sudden you notice a small yellow light, as small as a pinprick on the horizon. Salvation.
Pushing the driftwood infront of your chest, you heave your upper body onto it, and begin to kick furiously behind you with your legs. As luck would have it, the light was growing ever bigger and clearer. You could make out a longship, pushing the driftwood aside you began to swim as hard as you could.
Screaming as loud as you could you continued to propel yourself toward the boat. You heard a bell ringing and men shouting, as many more dots of light appeared on the deck. "Captain, there's a girl out there."
"Send a rope when she's closer." You heard a commanding yet ambiguous voice reply.
You continue to kick with your legs and swim towards the blacker than black mass on the water. A soft splash sent water into your face as you pulled yourself onto to the rope ladder that was thrown to your aid.
You tried to climb but your bare feet kept slipping from the splintered wood of the rungs. "Pull her up, pull her up!" A gruff man's voice urged, and you feel yourself begin to rise along the side of the ship. You're hauled over the side, landing on the deck, coughing from the effort.
A rough yet feminine looking hand was thrust towards you, and you take it. The person pulled you to your feet and looked you in the eyes before taking you to the Captain's quarters.
"'ere. Hot wine to warm you." The Captain said, thrusting a warm tin tankard into your hands. In the light of room, you could see the Captain was a rather noble looking woman. A black squid was embellished on her dark grey jerkin, some symbol of her company you supposed.
"Thank you." You replied, your voice hoarse from the screaming and the salt water. You take a deep drink of the wine, it's strong spices soothing your throat.
The Captain got up and rummaged in a set of drawers by the bed in the far corner of the room. She came back to you, with a pair of black linen undergarments, black woolen breeches and a black linen tunic."Do you have strength to stand?" She asked.
You weren't quite sure, but didn't want to seem weak infront such an imposing woman. You nod and finish your drink before taking the clothes. You struggle to unlace your overdress, the strings thick and slippery from the seawater. Your trembling hands didn't help matters either."Forgive me." She says, as she pulls out a knife. Your heart quickens, but the mysterious Captain simply cuts the several layers of clothing from your soaked body. You were stood as naked as the day you were born. "Move toward the fire, it'll dry you quicker."
You did as you were told and jumped when you felt a rough cloth being rubbed over your body. You didn't say anything, simply allowing her to dry you. "What's your name? I am Yara, but you will call me Captain." She asked.
"Y/N."
"How comes the Drowned God nearly claimed you?"
You look at her with confusion as you slip the dry clothes on. "I don't understand your meaning."
"How did you end up drifting in the sea?" She replied, rolling her eyes.
You explain the merchants ship you were working on, your enslavement and the subsequent wreck.
Yara chuckled and smirked at you. "Slave? Your masters most likely dead now, eh?"
You nod, looking down.
"Then you'll be mine. As per the customs of my people, you're my thrall now." She noticed your panicked confused expression and elaborated. "Like a slave, but not. I don't own you, you can marry and have children and cannot be bought or sold. But you will be bound to my servitude for life."
"I understand, Captain." You swallow hard, uneasy of this prospect.
"For now, I'm ordering you to get into bed and sleep. I'm sure you won't mind sharing for a few nights."
"Of course not, Captain."
