louis and olivia decide to go public with some pda
fluff
song: love story - taylor swift
—for most of her off days, olivia had been staying home and binging the twilight franchise and sex in the city. as fun as those were to watch, she'd decided today would be a different story.
that morning, she'd told louis that they should do something fun, like maybe take a small road trip somewhere around new york, not the city necessarily. he'd supported the idea eagerly and started packing their things as soon as she said so.
initially, she had been thinking of inviting her close friends conan, maddie, and iris to come along, but eventually thought it would be better to be alone with her boyfriend, since it would be more intimate. she'd then remembered conan jokingly telling her, "i knew i should've never sent you that picture louis. you're too all over him to spend time with your friends." the thought made her smile. at least they clearly knew who she belonged to.
then louis had suggested they drive around somewhere that wasn't manhattan, considering the hellish traffic and parking situation they'd be in. olivia agreed and they settled on driving down long island as far as they could for the day and stopping at places they found interesting along the way.
now it's almost sunset, and they're driving back to manhattan on a half-empty freeway. olivia's staring out the window, watching the blue sky fade into an orange and pretty pink with buildings passing by. harry styles' voice serenades them on the radio with adore you, and when olivia looks over at louis, the song only becomes more fitting. she knows he can sense her watching when the corners of his lips slightly turn up.
"can i tell you something?" he suddenly asks after a few minutes of quiet.
olivia turns from the window to face him, showing she's listening. "yeah, of course. what is it?"
"on instagram i always see people speculating about our 'alleged' relationship and everything, and that's fine, because we actually are in one," louis starts slowly while keeping his eyes on the road. "but... it makes me think. i don't think those headlines should read 'alleged relationship' anymore. i think it's time that people truly know about us."
there's a moment of silence between them, which makes louis think he's said something wrong or that she doesn't agree. but he's proven wrong when olivia nods.
"no, yeah, i agree with you. it's something i want to do. i've hid a couple of my relationships from the public before, and i don't feel like doing thag again. and practically everyone's already figured us out, so why not give them that confirmation?"
"yeah. the fans, they're too smart... they've been onto us ever since we became friends."
"some of them scare me sometimes, i won't lie."
"so how do we get the point across?"
olivia hums. "instagram post? no, that sounds like something from a hallmark movie. maybe through an interview? or..."
they glance at each other simultaneously. "paparazzi."

they make a stop at a gas station when they're less than five miles from manhattan, knowing that there will be at least somebody waiting for them. both of them get out of the car and louis tells olivia to get some snacks at the gas station while they wait for the paparazzi to arrive.
sure enough, paparazzi is gathered about twenty feet away from their car with their cameras pointed directly at them when she returns with a box of ritz crackers and coke cans. olivia tries not to look directly at them as she makes her way back to the car so that she doesn't let on.
louis unhooks the pump, whispering as she puts the snacks and drinks into the car, "they're watching. let's go for it."
olivia closes the car door and leans into louis, who's still holding the pump. they're already lost just staring at each other's face.
"ready?" she asks in a breathy voice, leaning closer to his face.
"ready."
with that, he pushes the pump into the car and presses his lips to hers, both of their eyes closing in pleasure.
because of their height difference, louis has to bend down to meet her height and puts his leg around hers. olivia wraps an arm around his shoulder and one on his back. knowing he'll reciprocate, she smiles into the kiss when one of his arms meet her back, but softly gasps when the other slowly moves down to her ass.
they're not even aware that they've started making out until they hear a clicking sound indicating that the car's gas tank is full. reluctantly, they pull away from each other and start to laugh, knowing the paparazzi got quite an eyeful and also knowing that they've just gone public at a gas station in long island, of all places. but it doesn't matter—they're both relieved to let the secret out.
"god, i love you," olivia says breathlessly, resting her head against his chest as he removes the gas pump and places it back where it belongs. he runs his fingers through her hair.
"i love you more," louis tells her, knowing she can't make a comeback. "that was quite a way to go public, don't you think?"
"the best way," olivia responds. she can't help but glance over at the paparazzi to see if they're still there and watching. granted, they are. "looks like we're public, babe."
he chuckles. "your friends and mine won't take this lightly when they find out. speaking of going mad, i think we should leave before the paps ask questions."
they get into the car, this time olivia being in the driver's seat and louis in the passenger's. louis reaches over to turn on the radio and taylor swift's love story comes on. as olivia drives them back onto the freeway they both sing along to the lyrics and take the time to enjoy themselves right then and there without a care in the world.

a mere couple hours later when they're back in the apartment, olivia's phone is blowing up with texts from her friends, who are losing their mind over her and louis confirming their relationship. she can only give vague responses when they ask for background on the pictures and why the fuck they did it at a random gas station instead of times square or central park—sometimes she loves to leave them with blank spaces.
"you were right," she says to louis. "my friends are having a field day with us going public."
"you're telling me. my friends won't stop either. how are the fans reacting?"
"same way." she shows him a fan account's post of their gas station kiss with the majority of the comments being "i'm so happy for them!" or "they're my favorite ship." others read "i can't believe my husband is cheating on me" or "hand placement, louis," which makes both of them laugh.
louis' phone continues to make sounds with the amount of texts he's receiving, making him run a hand through his hair. "millie won't shut up about how lucky i am. but she doesn't need to tell me."
olivia puts her phone down onto the kitchen island and looks up at him, placing her arms around his shoulders. "strange twist of fate, huh?"
"strange? i'd call it lovely." and with that, his lips are back on hers again.
