olivia and louis stargaze in the middle of the desert

the drive from nevada back to california makes for a much more gorgeous sight than olivia initially imagined. stars are spread out across the night sky over the mojave desert delicately like peanut butter, a soft glowing white.
they're coming back from vegas, where they stayed a night for olivia's 21st birthday. she and louis opted to drive back to la together instead of grouping up with everyone else, which made for a much more peaceful ride.
"this is beautiful," olivia whispers quietly to herself. having only lived in big cities, she's rarely seen night skies like this.
"i wouldn't mind stargazing on a night like this," louis remarks next to her. "i love just being able to take it all in."
"do you want to stop?" she asks him, glancing at him quickly before looking back at the road.
"i'd like to," he replies, "but we can't."
"why not?"
"we're over an hour behind your friends," louis responds, referring to their earlier activities and smiling. "besides, i didn't want to leave them without the grace of our presence for so long."
olivia laughs and shakes her head. "trust me, they're fine without us. can you call iris for me?"
louis nods and takes her phone, scrolling through her contacts before calling iris up, placing the phone on the dashboard.
"heyyy liv, what's up?" iris asks, dragging her words in a certain way that immediately indicates that she's drunk.
olivia sighs. "oh god. please tell me you're not the one driving."
"nahh, 'course not. madi's got it, goody two shoes. so what, something happen?"
"yeah, uh louis and i are gonna be a little late coming home."
"you're already late, but okay."
"we're gonna make a quick stop to stargaze. you see the sky, right?"
iris pauses. "i can't see shit. just some white dots and... a moving one? i didn't know stars could move! oh, wait, that's an airplane. you guys are too far behind."
olivia briefly glances over at louis and smiles as she talks. "we'll be quick. you have the keys to my place—which i'm starting to regret giving you—so i'll see you there. and hey, do not trash it just because i'm not there."
iris laughs on the other end. "well, i wasn't planning on it, but thanks for bringing it up! see ya."
as the call disconnects olivia rolls her eyes at what iris said and pulls off the highway and onto a gravel shoulder at the right time.
"now what're you doing?" louis asks, confused.
"what you wanted to do in the first place."
she leaves louis in the car with a surprised look on his face, walking over to the back of the car to open the back hatch. she takes one of the blankets stored inside and spreads it carefully over the hood. louis keeps watching from the passenger's seat without any objection.
then olivia bends over slightly to knock on his window and he slowly rolls it down, staring at her as she tells him, "if you're worried about denting the hood, it's fine, honestly."
louis just stares at her and she smiles, leaving him there to think.
getting up onto the hood is tricky at first but she manages to be able to sit on it after a couple tries. after watching her for a few seconds, louis finally opens the car door and follows after her, surprisingly being able to get on the hood after one try.
"damn," she chuckles at how quickly he joins her, his gaze already fixed on the sky.
"i'm surprised you wanted to do this," he says right after.
"what? stargaze?"
"no, get on the hood of your car," he laughs, trying not to shift around too much. "i didn't think you'd take the risk of denting it."
"it's worth it, just this once. i never see stars like this."
"not in the city, you don't."
suddenly, a coyote howls somewhere in the distance, which makes them both flinch. they end up accidentally hitting each other's shoulders at the same time, laughing about it after.
"i had a feeling we were being watched," olivia tells him with a playful smile.
"so did i. there's a different kind of paparazzi out here," louis jokes with a laugh.
louis and olivia stay in a comfortable silence for a few minutes as cold air swirls around them. she keeps her head tilted up to look at the sky, not being able to take her eyes off the beauty of the desert stars. but louis, however, can't take his eyes off of something else. someone else, rather.
"beautiful," he whispers under his breath. she smiles, thinking he's talking about the stars and the night sky. but to her surprise, she turns to see that he's looking right at her instead. her face turns a slight red and he chuckles. "it's true."
"i don't believe it," she replies as she looks up again. there's no way her looks are a match for the sky, she thinks.
"you would, if you could see how pretty you look right now."
"i mean... i could say the same thing about you, actually."
louis smiles slightly, both of their eyes now fixed on each other. "i guess we both love flattering each other." then he leans in close to her, eyes flickering to her lips. "and i can't lie, i'm enjoying it."
"mm. do you mind showing me how much?" olivia asks him teasingly, giving him an inquisitive look.
"not at all." he leans in to close the gap between them, and she swears fireworks go off somewhere.
they stay like that for some time, kissing each other under the starry night in the middle of a california desert. one of her hands moves to his face while the other runs through his messy hair, making him smile into the kiss.
the kiss eventually deepens, his hand tracing her jawline and trailing down to her neck. she lets out a sigh into his mouth, rubbing her thumb against his own jaw in response as they continue getting lost in each other.
before things can get too serious they pull away at the same time to breathe, looking into each other's eyes in the soft moonlight and the subtle glow of the overlooking stars.
"i think we should save that for later," louis finally whispers, giving her a look that makes her quickly take the hint.
"mm, i don't know if i can wait. we still have an hour and a half left to drive, you know."
he laughs quietly, staring off at the highway as he teases, "you survived the first three, so i think you can go one more."
"well, they're not really gonna care if we come back later or not. they love it when i leave my keys with them," olivia says, grinning at him.
he looks at her with a questioning smile. "so what are you implying?"
she bites her lip, glancing at the car briefly before looking back at him.
"olivia—" he says, but before he can get any other words in she's grabbing his wrist and opening the door to the backseat. he doesn't plan to object, quickly shutting the door behind them.
