—"louis, you ready?"
"yeah hold on, just trying to get the skates on."
"let me know if you need help."
"it's fine, i've got it."
olivia's watching the snow fall outside before she turns around to see louis about to stand up from the bench, looking like he's focusing on not falling over. he's wearing his signature heaven can wait sweater with a beanie and jeans, and of course, the ice skates.
"now i'm ready," he announces with a smile. "but can i tell you something?"
"yeah, what is it?"
"i might need a little help, i haven't ice skated in a while," he admits. "the last time was probably a couple years ago."
"really? but you're so good at regular skating," olivia tells him with laugh. "i'd expect you to be a natural."
"there's a fine line between them. like, you could say one's on ice and the other's on a sidewalk."
as they get closer they reach for each other's hands at the same time and walk towards the entrance of the rink.
"it'll be fine, babe," olivia assures him. "you probably remember more than you think you do. but you can hold my hand if you feel like falling."
"promise not to laugh if i do?"
"promise."
carefully, they both take a step onto the ice. he manages not to fall over or even stumble, and they move towards the center of the rink without letting go of each other's hands.
then he lets go of her hand suddenly and drifts off. onto the ice steadily. he's able to pick up momentum quickly, which surprises her.
"wow, you're a natural, lou," she laughs as she picks up the pace to catch up with him.
"wow, i didn't think i'd be this good that fast," he chuckles. he speeds up a little as he rounds a corner and olivia has to put in a bit more work to stay with him.
olivia watches as he keeps increasing the gap between them. "damn. you just keep getting faster."
"i can see that."
he's twelve feet away and gaining more distance apart from her quicker than he'd like when she thinks he may be getting out of control.
"louis, you know how to stop, right?" she asks. she isn't loud enough for him to hear her.
"liv! how do you stop?" louis exclaims, oblivious to what she just said. olivia skates over to catch up with him but the speed he's going is too fast for her to meet him.
"bend your knees!" olivia yells back. "dig the edge of your skates into the ice!"
louis listens too late. he manages to skate around olivia then when he slips, and she instantly reaches out to grab his hand to lessen the impact. it works just for a moment.
"oh, fuck!" louis exclaims, squeezing her hand as he falls to the ground.
as soon as olivia looks down, louis is sprawled onto the ice floor. a laugh escapes her and when he hears, he lightly pulls her down to the ground so she's on her knees and her palms are the only thing keeping herself from falling forward.
"what the fuck? what'd you do that for?" she's still laughing, struggling to stand up straight. despite him pulling her down she helps him up.
"i thought you promised not to laugh."
"i did, but you didn't have to bring me down. besides, me laughing was on accident."
louis rolls his eyes playfully as he stands back up. "sure. let's get back out there."
"okay, you know how to control yourself now, right?" olivia asks. "just to make sure you don't fall again."
"yeah, i'll be okay, babe. i'll try not to go so fast next time, now that i can remember how to brake."
she smiles. "you're welcome."
they skate for a couple more hours throughout the afternoon, and thankfully none of them fall again. louis gets in the swing of things quicker than he expects and he and olivia spend most of the time racing each other around the rink.
when the sun starts to set they decide to leave, and they walk to serendipity 3 to eat dinner and then head back to their apartment, paparazzi trailing behind them again with their repetitive camera flashes.
night falls over the city as they stay close on the couch watch a rerun of the outsiders. it isn't long before olivia falls asleep on louis' shoulder and he presses a kiss to her forehead before closing his eyes, the light of the tv dancing over both of them.
