Chapter 26: Butterflies and Bossy Knights
As the carnival's noise faded into the night, Luke and I wandered through the dimly lit streets, the atmosphere shifting from lively to serene. His arm was wrapped securely around me, steadying my uncoordinated steps.
In a drunken blur, I found myself playfully teasing him. "You know, Mr. Boss Man, you're quite something. All bossy and serious at work, and now you're my knight in shining... whatever," I slurred, giggling.
Luke's laughter echoed in the quiet street, deep and genuine. "A knight in shining 'whatever,' huh? That's a new one," he chuckled.
Reaching the hotel, I leaned against the door, my alcohol-induced boldness peaking. "And you, Luke Walton, are a surprisingly nice guy... not just a handsome, brooding CEO."
His eyes twinkled with amusement in the dim hallway light. "Well, Emily, you're full of surprises too. Tipsy confessions, for instance."
A little stumble had me crashing against the wall, but Luke caught me with ease. "Careful now. We're almost there," he said, a hint of laughter still in his voice.
Inside my room, he guided me to a chair. His care and attention were so unexpected, it made my head spin-or maybe that was just the alcohol. "You're like... like a superhero. Super Luke!" I declared, waving my hand dramatically.
Returning with a glass of water, he grinned. "Super Luke, is it? Drink this, it'll help with the spinning world."
Taking the glass, I felt an odd sense of warmth from his care.
"You're like, the best caretaker ever. Did you miss your calling, Luke?" I joked, the words slurring together.
He chuckled, sitting down beside me. "Just making sure you don't have too many regrets in the morning," he said softly.
I giggled, the sound echoing louder than I intended in the quiet room. "I'm not usually this... wild, you know. It's just that, Luke, you make more butterflies in my stomach and tonight, I just wanted them to sleep."
He laughed, a light, amused sound. "More butterflies in your stomach?".
I nodded earnestly, my words a little slurred. "Yeah...you do. You make everything inside me vibrate and fly like bird. You're just so hot. Do you know how hot you are, Luke?"
Luke stood up, a smirk playing on his lips. "Emily, you're so drunk. I'm curious if you'll remember any of this tomorrow."
I looked up at him, suddenly self-conscious. "I'm sorry, Luke. I'm not usually this drunk, really."
He offered a comforting smile. "Everyone deserves a night to let loose, Emily. You'll be fine. Just get some rest now."
As soon as he left, a rebellious idea struck me. I stumbled out and randomly knocked on a door down the hall.
The door opened, and I blurted out, "Hey! Party in my room!"
Again, he escorted me back, his patience evident. "It's bedtime now. No more hallway adventures."
As he turned away, I sneaked out once more, knocking on another door. "Hello, neighbors! Party at mine!"
Luke was back in an instant, this time a little more stern.
"Okay, Emily. That's really enough."
I leaned into him, my inhibitions completely dissolved. "You're so bossy. But kinda hot when you're bossy," I slurred, smiling up at him.
He sighed, a hint of a smile still on his lips. "I'll stay until you're asleep. No more mischief."
He settled on the couch, keeping a watchful eye as I finally drifted off. Despite planning to leave, exhaustion overcame him, and he too fell asleep, my unexpected guardian for the night.
