Chapter 35: Airport
The day was steeped in a bittersweet mix of greetings and farewells. As Luke prepared for his departure to New York, a blend of melancholy and anticipation washed over me. Memories of our impromptu honeymoon, a day of unexpected magic, lingered in my thoughts, highlighting Luke's commitment to making each moment memorable.
In the car to the airport, a profound silence surrounded us, each lost in our own reflections on the whirlwind that had brought us to this point. My heart was a tumultuous symphony, echoing the diverse emotions kindled by our sudden marriage.
Gathering my resolve, I broached the crucial subject. "I think we should keep our marriage private for now," I suggested, masking the tremor in my voice.
Luke looked at me, his face a canvas of surprise and concern. "Why's that, Emily?"
I took a deep breath, carefully framing my thoughts. "Considering how quickly we got married, I feel it's wise to avoid public attention until we've deepened our understanding of each other."
"Our whirlwind marriage, without truly knowing each other... It's best if we stay under the radar, avoiding the public eye while we grow closer," I clarified.
He intertwined his fingers with mine, a gesture of connection. "I know my past with relationships is spotty, but I see something special in you," he said earnestly.
"I feel it too," I responded, more confidently. "But we need to build a solid foundation first, away from the public's gaze."
Realization flickered in his eyes. "You're worried about how it'll look at work, and our public image?"
"Exactly. It's about establishing a strong foundation for 'us' without the pressure of public scrutiny."
Luke nodded, his initial hesitance fading into understanding. "Okay, I get it. We'll keep it low-key until we're more secure in our path."
As we neared the airstrip, our conversation hung in the air, a subtle yet significant understanding forming between us. Luke's expression softened, touched by empathy.
Relief swept through me. "Thank you, Luke."
He smiled, a warmth in his eyes that eased my remaining fears. "I'll miss your sexy ass," he said with a gentle laugh, his tone making me blush.
Our parting kiss was tender and reassuring. "You're mine, Emily. Don't forget that, and come back to NYC," he whispered.
I laughed, "I will, and you better stay true. Don't even look at another woman." My playful words belied the storm of emotions within me.
"Just you, Emily. You're the only one I see," he assured.
With one last deep kiss, Luke stepped out of the car. "We'll work through this together when you'r back," he promised.
Watching his jet take flight, I stood enveloped in solitude yet buoyed by hope. Our journey was unconventional, but it was ours alone. Together, we were poised to embrace whatever the future held.
