I made a gentle approach towards the bed and sat down my tray on the small bedside table, before reaching over to tap Kate awake.
I had a sympathetic, gentle look across my face as I tapped her gently.
"Wake up, Kate," I muttered in the softest tone ever. Of course she didn't bulge, which made me intensify my efforts.
I shook her shoulders, still keeping my action gentle.
"Bryan!" She exclaimed forcefully as she came awake. The look in her eyes were panicked and disoriented. She looked around as if expecting her dead son to be somewhere in the room.
When her searching eyes fell on me they fell with massive disappointment.
"What are you doing here?" She asked in a dead tone, looking away from me, like without her son the rest of the world didn't matter.
"I heard what happened. I am sorry," I said gently, my heart going out to her for her pain.
"I don't need your pity," she muttered coldly, her tone hard, staring at the wall on her side.
What is her problem? I frowned. She was treating me like I am the enemy. All I did was fuck her husband behind her back like she did mine.
"It is not pity Kate, and I know right now you feel like the world is coming to an end, like nothing matters. It is understandable..."
She turned immediately towards me with fire in her eyes. "You know nothing of how I feel, and if it is alright with you I will like to be left alone."
I sighed, understanding her anger and grief, but I am just here to help.
"Alright I will leave. Just one thing though. Remember you have another kid to worry about," I stood from the bed and headed towards the door.
Her sob reached me before I could lay a hand on the door handle, making me stop shot of the door.
Do I go to her? Or leave as she asked. She had made it clear that she didn't want my help.
Her sobbing got louder and pitiful which made the decision for me. I walked back to the bed and joined her.
I pulled her into my arms as she wept. Holding her without saying anything.
"It is all my fault," she cried clinging to me as more tears fell.
Everyone is claiming responsibility for Bryan's death, I wonder how he died.
"I am sure that is not true," I patted her gently on the shoulder.
She shook her head strongly refuting my words. It is, "I wasn't watching her because I was so busy catering to the guest. I was so lost in throwing the best birthday party ever that I lost track of my boy and he drowned. I shouldn't have asked you not to come in. I was so confident that I could handle it all."
After her confession she began to wail.
I didn't know the right words to utter at this moment, so I comforted her with my hands. Holding her more tenderly.
"What about Billy?" I was curious to know what excuse Billy gave her as to his absence yesterday.
She sighed heavily before speaking. Her tears has slowed down.
"He was unavoidably held back at work. Had a big house that the buyers wanted to close the deal today, so he couldn't leave them."
What!
Wow! That is a good one. I wanted to roar in laughter at Billy's excuse, but that will be sorely inappropriate. I shouldn't have been worried, not that I was. Billy have always been a good liar. I mean it took me ten years to sniff out his lying cheating ass.
