CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT
SUMMER OF '84

Aaron felt panicked as he sat in his bedroom bouncing his knee with his walkie in hand, unsure what to do regarding his friend group.

It was now midway through June of the year 1984, it was an extremely hot day, and Mike had called each of his friends on their walkies asking if they wanted to go to the pool in town. Of which everyone said yes.

This shouldn't have been an issue for the boy, but he knew that Kimmy hadn't been asked, despite the fact she was part of the friend group.

In hope to fix this issue, Aaron had said that everyone could just come over to his house and use his pool instead, that way everyone could come if they wanted - including the girl Mike seemed to grow a sudden distaste for after Eleven disappeared.

However his idea was soon shut down by Mike, the boy insisting that the plans were already made and that it would be a bother to change them now. Aaron wasn't stupid, he knew Mike knew he would ask Kimmy over if he had the chance.

He didn't know why he was always the only one to stick up for the girl when Mike went to shoot her down. Aaron knew she was friends with Lucas and Dustin too, quite good friends actually, it seemed whenever she wasn't with Aaron, she was with either Dustin or Lucas.

But it was as if whenever Mike said something to or about her not being a member of the party, he was met with radio silence. Leaving Aaron to receive all the eyerolls from his friend after defending the girl.

Aaron took a breath, making a rash decision to try get ahold of Mike.

After several minutes of trying, the sandy haired blond gave up, instead venturing out to use the phone. This time he did manage to speak with the boy.

"Hello?" Mike's voice rang through the phone, the boy sounding incredibly stressed as he did so.

"It's Aaron," the blond quickly replied, hoping to get the conversation over with. "I can't come to the pool with you guys today-"

"Why not?" Mike's voice was blunt, causing Aaron to grow nervous.

"Because Steve can't take me and I can't find my trunks." Aaron lied, hoping the boy wouldn't push him to far by coming up with a million solutions to his problems.

"Why don't you just borrow a pair of my extra trunks." Mike sighed tiredly into the phone, much to Aaron's disgust.

"Um, no." Aaron retorted, unable to hide his clear disgust at the thought of it. "That is disgusting why would I ever borrow-"

"Fine, whatever. Don't come." Mike interrupted, his tone worrying Aaron the slightest bit as he got the impression he'd pissed him off. "I'll see you later."

"Wait, listen." Aaron blurted, taking a breath to gain some confidence.

"Yeah, what?" Mike asked, sounding mildly concerned.

Aaron hesitated, wondering if he was putting his foot in his mouth by bringing this up.

"You've really got to stop leaving Kimmy out, Mike." Aaron blurted before he could stop himself, rattling off concerns faster than he could think. "She's my friend - she's our friend. I mean, how would you feel if your only friends acted like-"

With that, the phone line went dead.

Aaron sighed, placing the phone on the receiver before walking back to his room and picking up his walkie to talk to Kimmy.
