I completely forgot that Davis called Anya in for questioning. Events were unfolding at the speed of light, and I wouldn't be surprised if a meteorite crashed into my house or aliens attacked Earth, and the Avengers flew in to save everyone.

"Anya, why didn't you remind me?!" I rubbed my nose with such force that I felt like I could break it with my fingers. A cough came from the other end of the line, and I remembered that Caleb was still on the line. "Caleb, I'll call you back when I resolve the next crisis in my life." I hung up and looked at Anya, waiting for a response.

"Sorry, I somehow forgot about it myself," her guilty tone pricked me right in the heart.

"No, you forgive me, princess. Of course, it's not your fault; I should have been more attentive." I took a few steps toward her and encountered a tired look. "Come here." I pulled her towards me, so familiar and silly. I inhaled the scent of her hair, so sweet that it took my breath away.

"I'm so tired. Every time I think everything is going well, something inevitably happens, and it's always something not very pleasant," she lowered her gaze and looked at her fingers. My heart trembled; I wanted to hold her even tighter and protect her from all the evil in this world. We stood in the middle of the living room, embracing each other, as if the whole world around us had disappeared.

"My beautiful princess, I promise you everything will be fine; you'll be fine. I won't let anyone harm you, I won't let anyone upset you. I promise." I slowly leaned towards her and gently touched her lips, and she responded to my timid kiss. Our tongues touched, and it felt like an electric shock. I wanted to dissolve in her completely. She put her hands on my shoulders and touched my hair with one hand; shivers ran down my spine. She smelled like honey, mint, and mandarin; the contact with her tongue made my blood boil. I kissed her more persistently, getting more aroused. I barely held back from throwing Anya to the floor and taking her right on the cold marble floor. But I pulled myself together and stepped back, interrupting our maddening kiss. I looked at her carefully and said, "Agreed, princess?"

"Agreed," she whispered and, closing her eyes, let out a sigh. "So, I think it's time for me to go. I need to leave right now and try not to attract any unnecessary attention to myself and US."

"I can't go with you; I shouldn't be in the spotlight for at least another week," I paced back and forth, deeply concerned about letting her go there alone. "Caleb can't go with you either; he's busy with other matters and on the other side of the city. So, Max will go with you, but they probably won't let him inside. Still, it will make me feel better."

I took out my phone and sent a message to Max with instructions.

"Alex, calm down; it's just giving a statement. He won't put me in a cage, really, especially since you made a deal with him, didn't you?" Her words calmed me a bit, and I stopped pacing the room.

"It bothers me that you'll be alone with that jerk with a British accent. Moreover, the fact that he personally watched over you, drove you home, and that meeting in the park—all of it raises big suspicions for me." Anya chuckled softly, took my hand, and squeezed my palm.

"Exactly because he, as you put it, is a jerk with a British accent, you should be calm for me. The fact that he watched me and tried to be alone with me is just part of his job, Alex. He had to gather information, especially since we both understand that he knows there's more than just professional relations between us." Anya continued to hold my hand, and I rejoiced in it like a child. I wished she never let go of my hand.

"This is just giving statements, a formal part we can't skip. I promise to be careful and attentive, to think about what I say, and I hope it won't take much time." She smiled, and my soul became so calm and warm that I couldn't resist and gently stroked her cheek.
