As I approached the front of my home, I braced myself for the lecture I was about to receive from my mother. My luck really hasn't been the best lately, but I know I'm just doing it to myself. The only way to get through any of this with my mom though is to face things head on.
As soon as I stepped into the door, she was in the living room watching television. She turned her head to me and frowned. "Sit down Angel." She said as she pointed to the couch. I took a seat.
"Mom.." I started to say, but she cut me off. "Angel, do you know how off the chain you've been lately?" I sunk my body slowly into the couch cushions. She continued. "Underaged drinking, vandalism, and now .. skipping school?"
I still just sat there and said nothing, I wanted her to finish ranting first. "What I'm trying to get at..." she continued. "Is saying that since I can't seem to control you as your mother, I'm getting the police involved the next time you crack an offense!" My eyes grew wide.
"You're seriously going to call the police on your own daughter?" I said, infuriated. "First you threatened to kick me out, now it's calling the police? Some mother you are." I stood up and stormed away. "Angel!" My mother yelled behind me. "Get back here now!" I ignored her and shut my bedroom door.
I threw myself on my bed and sighed deeply. "If only I could stay the night with someone for the week." I said out loud to myself. My mother barged into my room. "What do you want?!" I yelled at her. She gave me a look of shock.
"Angel, I don't know what's gotten into you lately. If something is going on in your life, you know you can tell me, right?" I rolled my eyes and started to speak. "Nothing is wrong, Mom. I'm just trying to have fun in my last year of high school." She walked towards me and sat at the end of my bed.
"I know sweetie." She said softly. "I remember having days like that. You just need to be careful and make sure your grades are still satisfactory." I just sat and stared at the dark purple walls in front of me. She kept talking.
"I also fear for your safety Angel. Of course I don't want you smoking, doing drugs, drinking, etc. but I know you probably already have and I just want you to be careful and still stay safe and successful while you do so." I'm actually very shocked she's saying this out of nowhere. I decided now would be a good time to ask for my stuff back.
"Mom, if I promise to constantly check in with you while I'm out and about .. would you give me my phone back at least? I need to call you if something happens." She laughed at me. "Angel, don't try to manipulate me. I know what you're trying to pull. However, I do feel like taking your phone away while you're gone from home isn't the best idea. If only smart phones weren't a thing right now ..." my face lit up instantly.
"It's okay mom. I understand what you're trying to say. You don't want to seem like a bad parent. This is all on me and I'll be more careful next time, check in with you, and not skip school anymore, I promise." She sighed heavily. "Alright, thank you. I hope you can keep your word. I'll go grab your phone for you." When she left my room I nearly danced for joy.
A few moments later she returned to my room with my iPhone in her hand. As I tried grabbing it from her, she pulled away. "Don't take this new level of trust for granted Angel. I know you're turning 18 in two months, so I'm just trying to hope that you can lead a life on your own soon." I gave her a smile and reassured her I'll be okay.
As she handed me my phone, she leaned in for a big hug. This feels weird, I actually never hug my mother, but it wasn't a bad weird either. "Stay out of trouble kid." She said as she left my room.
Fuck yeah, I've got my phone and laptop back. As soon as I turned back on my phone, I noticed my notifications were blown up from the group chat me, Liz, Carrie, and Ava are in. I texted them, "Guess who just got their shit back!!" Liz texted back first.
