I was nearly in a deep sleep when my phone buzzed in the middle of the night. Why is someone texting me now? I reached for my phone and turned on the screen, it was Sapphire.

Sapphire: Hey Angel, sorry I didn't respond and sorry it's so late. I've been in the hospital with my grandmother all day long... her kidneys are failing, and she declined any transplants because she thinks it's her time to move on. She's dying... and I'm pretty upset about it. That's why I've barely texted back and haven't been at school. I'm really sorry...

Damn, I really don't know what to say. I feel so horrible that she's going through this right now, and it saddens me to know she's hurting right now. I started typing back.

Angel: Aw .. Sapphire, I'm so sorry. If you need to talk I'm always here.

Sapphire: I mean, I've been thinking all day and been alone with her so I guess that's not helping. So yeah, I guess it would be nice to talk to you right now.

I felt a smile form on my face.

Angel: Do you want me to call you? I know it's pretty late and we're both tired but maybe it'll make you feel better.

Sapphire: Yes that would be fine.

I took a deep breath and tapped the phone icon on the app. A tune rang for a few seconds, indicating Sapphire's phone was ringing. She picked up pretty quickly.

"Hey." She said depressively. "Hey." I said back softly. "How are you feeling?" She didn't respond for a few seconds, making me anxious again, but then she sighed into the phone. "I feel better now that I'm talking to you. I don't know why I thought sitting around alone all day with my phone turned off was going to help me any."

"Yeah," I responded. "I'm glad you think talking to me is helping you. Are you still at the hospital?" Once again, a few seconds of silence.

"Yeah." She said finally. "I want to leave but I'm afraid my grandma and parents will think I'm selfish for doing so." I started to respond. "Well, tell them you have school work to catch up on and need the rest too."

She sniffed into the phone. "I thought about that, but I .. I don't know." She stuttered slightly. I replied back with, "Would it help maybe if you came and picked me up and we got food? Being in that hospital is probably so depressing for you." She giggled softly. "Yeah, food always makes me feel better. I can always go back later right?" I smiled widely.

"Yes, that's right. If you want to pick me up I'll give you my address." Her voice picked back up to being normal. "Wouldn't your parents know if you sneak out of the house? I thought you just got in trouble."

I laughed into the phone. "Nah, I'm not worried about it. I used to do it all the time and they would never find out. Plus it's winter, they wouldn't suspect a thing." She laughed softly. "Alright Angel, I'll be on my way in a few minutes." I kept a huge grin on my face. "Alright, see you soon."

I lied in bed and wiggled around as I did a mini happy dance. I'm wanting to just wear a hoodie and sweatpants again, but I'm trying really hard not to bum out as much. I hopped out of bed and slipped on some skinny jeans and a sweater.

As I tip-toed downstairs slowly, I noticed all the lights were off, and my mom was actually sleeping in her room for once instead of the living room couch. Nice.

I headed towards the closet door and grabbed my big fluffy white coat and boots. I then sat in the living room and waited for Sapphire to text me that she's here.

After a few minutes of sitting around on my phone, Sapphire finally texted me that she was parked in front of the driveway. I opened the front door slowly and slid my way out of the house, with the key on me of course.
