We watch as she approaches us, Wilbur's hands dropping from my body. I feel my heart race, wondering what's going to happen.
"Hey, Will."
"Connie," He whispers, his jaw dropped and his chest rising and falling fast.
She gives me a small smile, which shocks me. "You're Eve, right? I like your music."
"Oh, thanks." I reply, forcing myself to grin at her.
"So, how are you?" She looks up at him. She's absolutely the better version of me by miles. Her hair is perfectly curled, looking styled but also effortless. Her makeup is perfect, enhancing each of her features. Her eyes are bigger than mine, her nose smaller, her lips fuller. I don't let myself look down at her body, knowing it'll make me spiral.
"We were just leaving." He sighs, his voice breaking.
"Come on, Will, don't be mean."
"You cheated on me with my best friend. In my bed."
"Two years ago. You've obviously moved on, get a grip."
Obviously moved on.
Wilbur just grabs my hand and leads me out of the house, using his other hand to get us an Uber. I don't bother speaking as we wait on the sidewalk, but I do notice his hand trembling a bit and his eyes getting glossy. The car pulls up and get inside, Wilbur not opening the door for me like he usually does. We stay silent in the car all the way to his mom's house, Wilbur immediately getting out. I pay and thank the driver before following him up to the front door.
"Talk to me, Will." I place my hand on his arm as he struggles to unlock the door.
He turns around and faces me, tears streaming down his twisted face. "I'm fine."
"You're obviously not."
"I just can't stand her. I'm fine."
I decide not to argue with him right now, not to spill every word I'm thinking. Neither of us are in good head spaces, so I just unlock the door for him. Immediately, he goes to his room, me to mine. I collapse on my bed and open my phone, finding Sofia's contact.
Me: Oh my fucking God I'm so stupid
Sofia: ????
Me: He's not over her at all. We were at a party and saw her and she acted chill but he started freaking out and literally crying when we were out of the house. He's only acting interested in me cuz I remind him of her.
Sofia: Oh.
Sofia: I'm so sorry Eve :(
Sofia: You need me to come up and visit??
Me: No it's fine. Thankfully I didn't get too attached yet.
Sofia: Okay well good. When are y'all flying back?
Me: Earlyyyy. He's gonna regret drinking so much.
Sofia: ...Am I wrong to say karma?
Me: 🫢🫢 No comment. I'm gonna go to sleep. Love you
Sofia: Love you 🫶 Sorry about Will
Me: It's ok lol
I set my phone down and crawl under the covers, praying to fall asleep. But all I can think of is Wilbur's pretty face and Connie's perfect, gorgeous self. Of course he still loves her. I should've known. Why would he even fall for someone like me? Especially someone like him? I'm seriously an absolute idiot.
I'm awake nearly the whole night, but at least that means I should sleep well on the plane. I join Sue in the kitchen for a quick breakfast before she asks me to wake Wilbur up, saying he'll be less grumpy with me. If only she knew how he treated me for the first few weeks we knew each other. I softly knock on his door before entering, his freakishly long limbs sprawled all over the bed, his face buried in his pillow. I sit on the edge of his bed and lightly shake him, having to get more aggressive until he finally wakes up.
"Whaaat?" He groans, rolling over but keeping his eyes shut.
"We have to go catch a flight." I tell him. I'm upset at him, sure, but I still tidy his messy hair. "Get up. We're leaving in fifteen minutes."
"No."
"No?"
"I don't wanna." His eyes open and look up at me. He grabs my arm and holds it, placing a kiss on my pale skin. "Stay here and take care of me for the day. I'm hungover like hell."
"Do you remember last night at all?"
"Uhhh," Wilbur places his head on my knee. "I just remember drinking a lot and making fun of people together."
I just nod, not sure how I feel about him not remembering breaking down about Connie. I stand from his bed and yank his covers off of him, making him groan again but much more dramatically this time. "Get up. We're leaving soon."
I leave the room while he continues whining. Sue's dropping us off at the airport, so I put my stuff in her car. We need to leave in five minutes, and Wilbur still isn't ready. I sigh as I pack his stuff for him and put it in her car.
"We're leaving," I tell him, grabbing a random sweatshirt and pair of sweatpants from his closet and throwing it at him. "Get dressed."
"No!" He protests again, pulling his pillow close to him. I'm sure he thinks he looks adorable or whatever right now, but I'm just frustrated.
"Stop acting like a fucking toddler and change."
"Only if you kiss me."
I really don't want to, but if it'll get him to hurry up, I guess I'll do it. I grab his face and kiss him for a good few seconds before pulling away. "There,"
"Just a bit more," He pleads, but I shake my head. He sighs and finally stands up. I leave the room and go out to the car, Wilbur soon joining us.
He doesn't even know how badly he hurt me last night.
