a/n: i know this is irrelevant butttt i got into my dream school today!!! i've been taking a gap year and i was worried i wouldn't get in anywhere so 😊🙏😊🙏
My legs dangle from the counter top, kicking back and forth. My fingers are gripped around the collar of Wilbur's shirt, keeping our faces together. I can taste the chapstick I make him wear on his lips as they move against mine, his hand cradling my neck.
"Oh, shit, sorry."
We both pull away and look at Sofia as she stands in her doorway. I give her an awkward grin and jump onto the floor. "It's fine. You feeling okay?"
"Yeah, just hungry."
"There's this really good cafe that's just a few minutes walk away. Will, wanna come?"
He stands still, his face showing his frustration from Sofia's interruption. "No, you guys go ahead."
"Come on," I groan, grabbing his hands. I really want him to like my best friend and vice versa, so I have to make them spend time together. "We'll get coffee and eat and then do a bit of shopping. It'll be nice,"
"I don't feel like getting followed by pap, baby."
"We have hats and masks and glasses for a reason." I tell him. "You're coming whether you like it or not."
He grins at me with an eye roll. "Alright, alright."
I turn my head to Sofia. "Leave in thirty minutes?"
She gives me a thumbs up before going into her room, and I follow Wilbur back into mine. Or, ours. Our room.
"So, I'm guessing we're not gonna be able to do anything while she's here?"
I pull a pair of baggy jeans and a bulky sweater on. "Oh, shut up. She's gonna get a job, so she won't be here all the time. Plus, I promise you'll be fine without it. You went two years straight."
"Yeah, but I wasn't sleeping beside a beautiful girl every night." Wilbur sticks out his bottom lip, pulling me in by my waist.
I giggle and go on my tip toes, giving him a quick kiss. "You poor thing."
Since I have no need to do my hair or makeup, Wilbur and I wait in the living room for Sofia until she's ready. Once she is, him and I put on a face mask, sunglasses, Wilbur a beanie, myself a baseball hat.
Sofia smiles at us as we step out the door. "Ooh, I like being the best friend of a star."
We eventually reach the cafe and take our seats. Sofia offers to order and pay, and after lots of convincing, we let her. As she stands at the register, I lean against Wilbur at our table, both of us slipping off our masks and glasses.
"Isn't she sweet?" I ask him, resting my hand on his arm.
"Yeah, she is." Wilbur gives me a soft smile. "God, you're beautiful."
I bite my lip and glance away from him. "I'm not wearing any makeup. I'm breaking out, too."
"And you're still the prettiest girl in the world." He leans over and kisses me, but I break away as Sofia approaches our table, setting our tray of drinks down.
"Thanks, Sof." I grin at her and immediately take a sip of my warm cappuccino. I give Wilbur a soft kick under the table as he takes his drink.
"Right, uh, thank you, Sofia." He gives me a side glance and a kick back.
"Least I can do." She says. "Are there any cute single guys that either of y'all know? I'm desperate for a boyfriend."
I laugh. "We only know each other. Well, Wilbur knows his band."
"You don't want any of them." Will chuckles. "Eve, you know Jared."
"God," I scoff. "Never mention him again."
Sofia smiles and stirs sugar into her coffee. "I can't believe you punched him, Wilbur."
"I was drunk." He says with a smirk. "And pissed off."
"Very bad combo." I pitch in.
"Yeah. Thank God Eve didn't let me fight him, because I might be in the hospital right now."
"And that's proof that I love you."
Wilbur rolls his eyes. "Yes, darling, thank you for not wanting to see me get killed. I really appreciate it."
"Anytime!"
We eventually end up at Target, grabbing light groceries and some essentials for Sofia that she left at school. We stroll around, Wilbur and I disguised again as he pushes the cart. I hold Sofia's hand, swinging our arms back and forth.
Sofia suddenly lowers her voice to a whisper. "Watch this,"
I give her a strange look as she softly gasps, making Wilbur turn and look at her, too.
"Fuck, why is that angry guy walking towards us? Wait, is that Jared?"
Wilbur and I both snap our heads towards where she's pointing. All there is is an empty aisle and Sofia bursts out in laughter, pressing her hands against her stomach.
"Oh my God!" I giggle and shove her. "I got so scared!"
"That was cruel," Wilbur laughs, holding his heart. "I was about to run off."
"I couldn't resist," Sofia says, wiping a tear from her eye. "It was too easy."
I wrap my arm around her shoulder and kiss her cheek through my mask. "You're fitting right in."
