Wilbur
My hand rests on Eve's thigh as my other grips the steering wheel. Her playlist plays softly through the speakers, turned down after I realized she was asleep against the window. There's just a few minutes of driving left, so the view is getting extra pretty. Smaller mountains sit against the sky, dimming down as the day progresses. I'm glad we'll reach the house right as the sun officially sets; I know Eve wants to see that view.
I glance over at her for just a second, smiling and wish I could admire her more. Her hair is a bit messed up and there's drool falling from her lips. Thankfully, she doesn't snore, but she says I do, which I don't believe.
I pull onto the gravelled driveway, immediately thankful that my car isn't too low. I park in front of the house, which is a legit wood cabin. I unbuckle and nudge Eve's arm, taking a few tries for her pretty blue eyes to show.
"We're here, darling."
"Yay!" She says softly and yawning, sitting up straight and grinning as she sees the house. "Damn, I've missed it here."
"When's the last time you were here?"
"My junior year, a few months before Ryan left for school. So, a year and a half, I guess."
We both get out of the car, thankful to stretch our legs. I open the trunk and pull on her book bag full of stuff and grab both of our suitcases. I walk up to the porch and Eve stands there, holding the key.
"She hides it under a damn frog plant pot." Eve says. "I tell her the house is gonna get trashed."
"Hey, at least it means we're here."
"True," She unlocks the door and lets me in first. I look around, seeing the inside is just bigger than my apartment. Eve leads me to the master room and takes her stuff from me, setting it on her side of the bed. "Wanna call a place to order dinner, unpack, then the food arrives once we're done and go sit on the dock to eat it?"
I nod and we look up places to eat around here. We agree on one and I place the order for both of us. I unpack the two outfits I brought and place them in a drawer with Eve's tons of clothes. As I do so, Eve comes up from behind me and wraps her arms around my stomach, her face pressed against my back.
"Thanks for coming here with me." She says. "I was worried you'd say no."
"Why would I say no?"
"Cause we just started dating. I didn't know if you'd find it weird for us to go on a mini vacay."
I turn and smile down at her. God, I love how short she is compared to me. She's above average height for a girl, but my height makes her look a lot shorter. "I don't think it's weird. I think it's nice. Plus, we've been friends for a couple of months, it's not like we're strangers."
"Friends?" She scoffs, lightly pushing my chest. "I wouldn't have called us friends."
"Well, we knew each other."
"Mhm, that sounds more right." She grabs the collar of my shirt and pulls me down to her level, connecting our lips. I lean my back against the drawers, pulling her body against mine, but right as I do, the door bell rings. Eve pulls away with a frown. "Guess I gotta get that."
"Cock blockers," I mutter.
"Shut up," She laughs before turning and walking out of the room.
I smile to myself as I pull on a hoodie, knowing it'll be chilly outside. It's only September, but it's upstate New York, so it's definitely not warm. I step out of the room right as Eve shuts the door, holding our bag of food with a grin. She leads me out the back and to the dock, which is nice even though a bit small. There's an overhead covering and fairy lights with a swing and two rocking chairs.
"We should play our guitars out here after we eat. It'll look cute," Eve tells me as she takes pictures of the purple-pink sunset.
"Yes ma'am," I sigh as I sink into a rocking chair, pulling our trays of food out and handing Eve's to her. We sit quietly as we eat, simply watching the calm water and pretty sky. We're both non-talkative people, so I love how we can just enjoy silence together. Connie always had to be talking, which she knew I hated, and she always got upset when I wouldn't reply. It's not because I was mad at her or whatever like she thought, I just like to not speak sometimes. Eve understands that.
"So, are you a pussy, or are you gonna swim?" Eve smiles at me as she sets her empty tray next to her chair.
I laugh and meet her eyes. "I didn't even bring anything to swim in."
"Oh, whatever. No one said you have to be clothed while swimming. The closest neighbor is, like, five miles away."
"Shit, did you take me out here to kill me?"
She gives me a side eye with a small smile. "I'm not gonna comment."
I chuckle and pull a cigarette and my lighter from my pocket, bringing the lit cig to my lips. "You gonna swim or sing with me first?"
Eve sighs, thinking about it. "I'm guessing that we're gonna start drinking and smoking soon, so I'll save swimming for after that. Maybe we can just play our guitars tomorrow, but when there's better lighting."
"Whatever you want, darling." I run my hand over my jaw. "I need to shave tonight."
"No," Eve whines. "You look so sexy with a bit of stubble. Keep it for another day or two."
"I thought you didn't like facial hair."
"I don't really love full on beards, but stubble is hot." She leans over and kisses my cheek. "Now, you ready to swim?"
