It had been a few hours since Lucas and his team left alnus, and things had gone smoothly so far. They were briefly confused by the lack of villages, but quijcly remembered feudal villages were typically few and far between.
Eventually, however, the team came across a small village. At first, they were confused why there wasn't anyone outside.
However, they quijcly noticed a few villagers poking their head out of doors and windows. Eventually, an elderly man left his home and approached the soldiers.
He spoke to them in a language the men couldn't understand. This was when Lucas got an idea. He pulled out a device from his pocket and put it in his ear. He then offered one to the old man and signed him to do the same.
"can you understand me now?" Lucas asked. To the elderly man's surprise, he understood every word. Lucas explained the device allowed people to understand different languages, and that they were just exploring the area. The old man then asked for a favor.
"we have been trading with elves who come from a village deep in the forests to the north. However, they have seemingly ceased all contact, and we can't risk going through the woods. Could you please see what's going on?"
Lucas, to the hesitance of his team, agreed, and they drovr off towards the forest

The team eventually made it to the elf village. Unfortunately, they arrived too late. When they made it, they found it doused in flames, the sillouhette of a large creature seen through the flames in the distance.

Lucas and the rest of the team were horrified
"someone take a picture of this. We need to show this to the commander" Lucas said, trying desperately to hold back a stutter. One soldier feebly nodded before pulling out a camera and snapping a picture.
As the team searched the remains of the village, they noticed the corpses littering it. Some were charred to a crisp, others seemed as though they were chewed to pieces. Either way, they were about to head out until Lucas looked down a well, discovering something he never expected: a young elf girl with blonde hair and a green dress at the bottom of the well
He immediately yelled to his team "hoist me down, we have a survivor!".
Around half an hour later, the team emerged from the forest, the young elf girl in Lucas' arms.

An hour later
Coda village
The team eventually arrived at coda village. The villagers were shocked at the sight of the unconscious elf girl.
"when we found the village it was burnt to a crisp. As far as we know, she's the only survivor" Lucas explained to the villagers before handing them the picture. The town leader gained a horrified expression when he saw the creature in the photo.
"t-thats a flame dragon! It wasn't supposed to awaken for another 50 years! We must move immediately!" he cried
The other villagers immediately ran for their homes, seemingly to gather their things. The villager explained that, once the dragon gained the scent of flesh, it would not stop until it has found more, before going back into hibernation.
"we could help you. We'll let you keep your stuff in out vehichles and transport you to where you need to go?" Lucas offered. While his teammates were hesitant, they did understand that the villagers needed help, considering how close the flame dragon was.
The villager thanked them profusely before instructing his fellow townspeople to place their belongings in trucks. They decided to put them in one of the two behemoth trucks, as they had three others back at alnus.
After everything was packed, and the villagers were inside two of the m205 trucks, the convoy set off back to alnus

Around two hours into the trip back, members of the team were starting to get nervous.
Meanwhile, the villagers were talking among themselves, amazed at the likes of the m205, which they called an 'iron, horseless cartridge' and the m8508 scorpion tank, which they called an 'iron elephant'.
The convoy had also picked up multiple people on its way to alnus. The two most prominent were leila la lelana, a young mage from the city of rondel

And Rory mercury, a girl who claimed to be an apostle of this world's goddess of death

In that time, the young elf girl they rescued from the well had also woken up. After allowing her to be alone to grief for her destroyed village, she introduced herself as tuka.
(look, I wanted to give these characters proper introductions. But, given how I suck at character introductions, I figured I'd just show it over a time-lapse instead. Plus, if you're reading this, it's almost certain you've already seen the anime and already know who these characters are)
Still, members of the crew couldn't shake the feeling that something terrible was going to happen.
Lucas radio'd the team in the m205 at the back of the convoy. "hey, see anything?"
The response was "checking now... Doesn't seem like any... Holy shit, LOOK OU-!"
They abruptly cut off. However, Lucas didn't need any indication as to what it was: he could here the commotion from where he was. The flame dragon had found them.
