In the east of the continent, fighting had practically ground to a Halt. What was originally a near-endless string of victories for the British and Republican forces had been ended by the arrival of solarian forces. With their riflemen training members of the imperial army, they quickly adapted to this technology, and would form the core of the imperial army's new 'grim rifles' brigade, their new cloaks bearing the crest of zorzals new imperial flag.

This new unit was quickly deployed to the eastern front. Their arrival took the advancing forces by complete surprise, and forced them into retreat, causing alarming casualties for both Republic and British forces.

The imperialists celebrated these events, believing their victory was mere weeks away. However, all the grim rifles were able to succeed in was stabilising the front: the British still held the technological advantage, with their artillery devastating enemy forces.

As well as this, the cold had set in much sooner than anticipated, a large snowstorm sweeping through the east and putting an end to most major offensives. This effectively forced both sides to dig in, and made the British switch to a form of warfare they belived they had left dead over a century ago: trench warfare.

This form of warfare had also changed the Republican forces as well. An elite corp of soldiers were given new uniforms, with dark blue trench coats, heavy combat boots, steel plated armor and even gas masks reminiscent of soldiers from the first world war. Due to their bravery and tenacity, as well as their alarmingly high casualty rate, they would come to be known as 'the saderan death corp'
