As you watched Soap and his new girlfriend laughing from across the room, your heart aches as you observe them. Ghost was sitting next to you, he traced your line of sight and sighed.
"Why didn't you tell him?" Ghost's voice was soft as you shifted your attention from him to your hands.
"What difference would it have made?" you replied, your voice equally quiet. "If he felt the same way, he wouldn't be with her."
Ghost took a deep breath next to you, and you turned your gaze back to Soap and his girlfriend, your eyes lingering on her. What made it even more painful was that she looked so much like you. You had harbored an unrequited love for Soap for as long as you could remember, but you had never had the courage to tell him.
When Soap had first told you he was seeing someone, your heart had broken into a million pieces. Despite your feelings, you did your best to be happy for him, even though the pain inside you was almost unbearable.
Six months had passed since he'd started dating her, and during that time, Soap would often confide in you about the problems he had with her. A month into their relationship, she began to be verbally abusive, and it seemed like she had changed a lot. She stopped listening to him, and she'd throw tantrums when things didn't go her way. Soap was on your couch again, ranting to you about her. Your hand rested over his.
"You need to end things with her before you get stuck. It will only get worse if you stay," you urged. He sighed, taking your hand in his, his thumb caressing your knuckles. He looked at you with heavy sadness in his eyes.
"I can't leave her, lass," he whispered. You furrowed your brows, your concern deepening.
"Why not? Do you love her?" Your question hung in the air, and you waited with bated breath for his answer. Your eyes pleaded with him not to say yes, begged him to be honest.
He opened his mouth, but the words didn't come immediately. He thought for a moment before mumbling, "No... I don't." Your brows furrowed even further, as you couldn't understand why he was with her in the first place.
"Then why are you with her?" you asked, your eyes searching his for answers. There was a conflicted look in his eyes that you couldn't quite place. You'd never seen Soap like this.
He looked so torn. He sighed and turned his gaze away from you. It was clear that there was something about her that had drawn him in, and you wanted to understand.
You reached out and touched his cheek, gently guiding his gaze back to you. "You can tell me anything, Soap, you know that, right?" you reassured him. He held your gaze but struggled to find the words he wanted to say. His phone buzzed next to him, and he turned his attention to it, breaking the moment between you.
You withdrew your hand from his cheek, finding the pockets of your hoodie. He was typing on his phone, the words left unspoken.
"I'm sorry, y/n. I have to go," he said as he stood, and you followed him to the front door. You both stopped there, and he turned to you, wrapping his arms around you in a tight embrace. Your head rested on his chest, and he combed his fingers gently through your hair. You let out a sigh, wishing this moment could last forever.
"I love you, lass," he said, his words catching you by surprise. Your eyes grew wide for a second before softening. You had forgotten it was a normal exchange of affection between you two, but hearing it at this moment brought a bittersweet feeling to your heart.
"I love you too. You know I'm always here for you," you whispered, squeezing him a bit tighter. Soap seemed hesitant to leave, but eventually, he opened the door and departed.
