The very next morning, the atmosphere at the office was heavier and feverish. We were assigned bunches of papers to conduct. For some reason, it was a blessing in disguise because working continuously helped me stifle my thoughts about Aiden. Our paths did not meet after that fatal termination of the meeting.
After leaving the office, Elliot suggested watching a movie would be an epic remedy after the exhausting day at the office, so we watched the movie till late at night, and subsequently, he departed to his room.
In midst of assessing the paper, I heard the sound of steps and I tilted my head, only to greet Mrs. Maria.
I smiled and she returned as brightly while taking a seat in front of me.
"Miss Gracia, how is your work going on?"
"It's going great, working on the last proposal."
" Well, Mr. Roosevelt has appointed you to oversee this project with me. So before sending the proposition to Mr. Stallard for final approval, you have to evaluate it with me." She explained.
Two-aspect invaded my mind after her acclamation.
Firstly, Does Mr. Roosevelt know about my and Aiden's relationship? Was that the reason he ordained me to oversee the project?
Secondly, I had to face Aiden time again, until this project is complete, and probably after that too, because Mr. Roosevelt was his uncle.
Could I face him? No.
Reluctantly, I nodded.
"And Emerald, tomorrow there is a business charity ball to which our company is invited, it will benefit our current project, so we both are accompanying Mr. Roosevelt."
I wanted to decline the invitation because I had never been to elite parties before let alone a business ball, however, I couldn't refuse, it wasn't about me, it was all about business and this was a great opportunity to challenge myself.
" Okay."
The morning waned, and Mrs. Maria and I were besieged by piles of papers, we discussed everything from a single grain to a jar full of grain, indefinite benefits, drawbacks, possibilities, and recourses regarding the project. She was proficient and fine in whatever work she performed, and all were on display as she talks about the ideas.
"You are a diligent woman, Miss Gracia, now I understand why Mr. Roosevelt chose you to direct the project." I could see her eyes gleaming with respect and admiration, I was so delighted to receive appreciation from her, after all, she was my mentor.
I beamed.
"We are done with the paperwork, please take documents to Mr. Stallard for approval," she said.
I sighed, heavily.
This was a most dreadful moment, I wasn't waiting for, however, if not today then maybe tomorrow I had to face him, we couldn't avoid each other as we were working at the same place, on the same project. But I had decided that once he would start to control or demand me for anything except work-related things, I would quit the job, then and there. As for now, I had to approach him for approval. Mrs. Maria soon retreated to her cabin leaving me to work on my given task.
I had to be professional.
I headed toward Aiden's office, with this mantra ringing in my head.
His office was situated on the crown of the building, so it was a protracted walk to reach there. Soon, I stood before his cabin, with files in my hands and a sprinkle of reticence swirling in my head.
When I softly knocked on the door, a deep sound was reimbursed, "come in."
All intentions of keeping papers discreetly exploded with his answer, I had hoped he wouldn't be there so, it would make it easy for me to keep papers on his desk and leave but guess what, I was wrong and now I had to face him. I had not seen him the entire morning and he too didn't approach me. I thought he knew what is better for him that's why he was on his own way.
