Chapter 13

Unexpected.

Shocking.

But subtle.

This was how I could characterize Roosevelt's landing. I had seen a few exorbitant dwellings, in a brief amount of time. However, when I saw Mr. Roosevelt dwelling, it was not what I predicted it to be. Before me, stood a two-floor spectacular house, it was small compared to the properties I had visited, but I could feel every wall wielded with care and a homely feeling. It was not grand but sweet. It was perfect.

I looked at Aiden.

For some reason, he appeared agitated and unsettled. He gazed at me with chaos surging in his eyes, I held his one arm, settling flower in the other hand which we brought on the way.

" Are you okay?"

"It's been four years," he whispered.

It's been four years since he came here, and I deciphered his unspoken words. Silently, I squeezed his hand in assurance, I am here for you.

He gazed at me and flashed his breathtaking smile, making my heart flutter inside my chest.

He rang the bell, and we waited in anticipation, Aiden had called earlier to Mr.Roosevelt so he was expecting us. I was also a little apprehensive because it was also my boss's house, and I had to be in an excellent manner. A few moments later, the door unlocked revealing a woman looking in her mid-fifties, with a sweet face and warm smile.

" You must be Aiden, Eric had told me lots of things about you...and you must be Emerald, it's nice to meet you both," she enthusiastically ranted.

" It's nice to meet you..." I trailed, uncertain how to address her.

" Oh, I forgot to introduce myself, I am Samantha and please call me Sam because it makes me feel younger," Mr. Roosevelt peeked from behind her, and I looked at Aiden who was staring at unduly feverish Samantha with incredulity in his eyes.

" Samantha let them come inside, we don't want them to think that we are rude," Mr. Roosevelt said.

" Yes, come in, come in," she gestured for us to come inside.

"Thanks for having us, Mr. Roosevelt." I smiled, politely.

Quit the formalities, call me Eric," he smiled looking between me and Aiden with a teasing look. Redness crept through my cheeks, and Aiden squeezed my hand with a smirk on his face.

" This is for you," I handed Samantha the flowers that we brought, and she seized them and inhaled the smell. " These smells amazing."

"Okay, so Samantha already knows you both. This is Samantha and we both are dating," Eric said settling his arm around her shoulder.

I smiled with a nod, while Aiden's countenance remained expressionless. We strode through the foyer inside the house, the furnishings were modern and fine, it was practically a luxurious house from the inside. Aiden seemed oblivious, I touched his hand to gain his attention, and he glanced at me questioningly.

"What happen? You seem a bit distracted." The concern was knitted in my voice.

He shook his head.

" It's nothing."

Why do I feel there is something.

I glanced in front and saw Eric and Samantha were talking about something so I was relieved they won't be hearing our conversation.

"Aiden please tell me what happen," I persisted and he heavily sighs.

"This place holds a lot of memories. Some good and some bad."

His eyes were sad and distressed, this place brought the recollection of old moments. Often places can expedite the memories and perhaps this place evoked the memories which had been buried deep inside him.

" It's okay, you are strong."

His lips curled from the end, and a flash of affection flickered in his gaze. We stared each other entirely forgetting there was an audience around.

The sound of clearing throat entered my ears, my eyes glided in the direction of the voice and saw Eric amusedly smiling at us.

"Dinner is ready, all I need is to set the plates," Samantha said.

"Let me help you," I said and she nodded and we both headed to the kitchen. The air in the kitchen was filled with the aroma of fresh and delicious cooked meals. She undid some food and it seemed mouth-watering.

"This all looks so delicious," I commented collecting the set of plates.

"Thank you, dear, I used to be a chef," she said while removing the baked potato from the oven.

"Oh, I wish I could cook I like this but guess what I am not blessed in this department."

"Oh dear, don't worry I can teach you," she offered.

"Really? Because I am a verified bad student in cookery," I hoped she will still keep her offer, after I revealed the fact about myself.

"Don't worry, I have handled the worst and I am sure just a little push and you will be proficient" she laughs.

"Thank you for having so much faith but I am saying the truth I couldn't cook to save my life asked Aiden he doesn't even let me get inside his kitchen," she just looked at me with a smile.

Her stare intensified, making me uneasy under her gaze.

"I could see the love in your eyes for him," she expressed and spontaneously, my gaze slid through the glass window (which was dividing the kitchen and dining room) to Aiden, who was reclining on a chair speaking buoyantly with Eric.

I smiled at the spectacle.

"I love him more than anything."

"His eyes reflect the same love, even more. Even a blind man can see it, I wish everyone get true love like at that."

Why there was sadness in her voice? She had the love, she had that person to look at her like that, I could see the care and devotion in Eric's eyes, so why was there a line of misery on her face? Perhaps, I was taking it all in the wrong direction. Maybe, this gloom was for some other reason.
