Tears blurred Elara's vision as she scrolled through the endless stream of comments, each echoing the same sense of loss. Disbelief gripped her. This wasn't just a role; it was THE role - the one that had transformed her into Elara, the actress. It had reshaped her destiny. Sighing deeply, she set her phone aside. The more she read, the more the urge to cry and scream overwhelmed her. It felt so unjust. After countless auditions and hovering on the brink of giving up, fate had smiled upon her with this character, only to snatch it away in an instant.
What was she going to do now. Sure she can pay the next few months bills but what about after, what if she never gets another life altering chance like this again. What if this was chance, it was the chance. And now it's gone. It was there yesterday and gone today. Her mouth was getting more drier and the thoughts were becoming even more unbearable. She had to do something, she knew she couldn't sit there and cry for hours, even though that's all she wanted to do. But as always she knew no one would come and help her and if she started crumbling - she would not be able to stop herself until she's shattered completely. No Elara wouldn't allow that, she knew she had to get up.
Wiping away the tears, Elara rose from the sofa. Earlier, in the morning before she find out the news , which now feels like a whole life time ago, everything was normal. She woke up at 9am and made herself some Avocado on toast and she used the red lighter to light up her cinnamon and syrup candle- her favourite part of her morning routine. But now, even the candle was a mere flicker, nearing its end.
Desperation called for desperate measures, and though she loathed smoking, today it was a necessary solace. She walked over to the bookshelf, retrieving a hidden stash behind her baby picture, an ironic reminder of simpler times. Opening the window, she perched on the ledge. As she smoked, the rising wisps seemed to take her thoughts with them, leaving a strange blend of serenity and numbness. In this moment, Elara mused on the irony of happiness, finding a bitter truth in the saying: money can't buy happiness, but sometimes, a different kind of green might.
