"You shoot me down, but I won't fall
I am titanium"

Titanium - David Guetta ft. Sia

It wasn't the pain that woke her, nor the strong scent of alcohol that had struck her nostrils. It was the agitated voice of a woman.

"Do you think I'm kidding? Come here right now. You have no idea of the stench of dog blood in this house now. It won't go away, I'll have to burn down the entire house."

Silence.

"Don't use that tone with me, Felix. I didn't hurt her. I found her like this, lying on the floor of my living room, in a pool of blood."

Silence again.

"Do you think I'm a doctor? I swear to God, Felix, if a fucking shape-shifter dies in my house... Yes! Get here now."

Leah half-opened her eyelids and noticed the light coming in from the living room window. She had learned to recognize the position of the light there and it was most likely mid-morning. She could almost see a glimpse of the blue sky through the old wooden window frames.

She turned towards Emma, who was speaking softly to herself in Italian, and from the tone, it seemed like she was cursing. The light was striking her pale skin, making it glow.

Leah opened her mouth, attempting to speak, but had to clear her throat a couple of times. The sound caught Emma's attention and she quickly turned towards her.

"Thank God, you're alive."

Alive, yes. Even though she didn't feel well at all. She felt like she had survived a poorly executed cliff dive.

The embarrassing thing was that, despite the pains and injuries, Leah's first thought was that she was hungry. Very hungry. Her stomach growled loudly.

She might have felt embarrassed if she hadn't already reached the limit, naked, covered in blood, and lying on the floor of a vampire's house.

"I can't believe it," Emma muttered, hearing the noises from her stomach. "Okay, I'm trying to be as calm as possible, at least until Felix arrives. I've already treated your wounds."

At those words, Leah lightly touched her neck, finding it bandaged.

"But there's little I can do for broken bones and bruises," Emma continued. "So, I'm taking you to bed now, and I'll give you something to eat because if you die while I'm here, I'll have to endure Felix's anger for the next ten years and I really don't want that."

She should have been on the road to recovery by now. It shouldn't take so long to heal from a couple of broken ribs. This was what happened when a shape-shifter didn't feed enough, apparently.

Since she had no intention of being touched by Emma, Leah clung to the sofa cushions with one hand, while the other rested on her sore ribs, to pull herself up slowly. It took her almost a couple of minutes, at the end of which, Emma cleared her throat.

"Great. If you can do that, you can also climb the stairs."

Yep, she wasn't so eager to touch a shape-shifter either.

Leah reached the upstairs floor in what felt like an eternity. When she lay down on the bed, she realized it would be impossible to stay awake. Her body needed to heal, any movement was a waste of energy.

She managed to put on only a long shirt that reached her thighs, before losing consciousness again.
