Gethen's POV
Takes place in the events before Book 1
Fintan had given me one job. Spy on the Moonlark, then bring her into our clutches. The Black Swan's weapon would be ours. I could practically see the Black Swan scrambling. I grinned, then realized that I was on a street full of humans. I quickly smothered it. I could not be seen as suspicious. It would foil my plan, and I could not have that. I needed to move up in the Neverseen, and this would be the perfect way to achieve it. I just had to successfully finish the mission.
Suddenly, I rammed into a lamppost, disrupting my scheming. I may or may not have let out a tiny squeak, eliciting stares from nearby humans.
Great. Just what I needed.
You saw nothing, I transmitted to them, then quickly paced away.
Maybe this whole living with the humans thing would be a lot harder than I had anticipated. But I would not go crying to Fintan. I would succeed, no matter how many obstacles stood in my way.

"I've got sights on the Moonlark," I said into my walkie-talkie. Could I have used an Imaparter? Yes. But a walkie-talkie sounded so much more fun.
"Great. Don't lose her." Fintan's staticky voice ordered.
"Are you doubting my skills?" I asked. "Because there is no way I'm losing–wait, where'd she go?"
Fintan sighed angrily, but it sounded more like a growl. "Don't walkie-talkie me again until she is found." With that, I heard a click, and Fintan's voice disappeared.
"Talk about being overdramatic," I grumbled to myself. But I had no time to be petty. I had a weapon to find.
My voice wavered in fear as I sang to calm my nerves. "The itzy bitzy sp-AAAAH!" I was suddenly attacked by a vicious dog. Talk about uncalled for!
"UNCOOL!" I told it.
The dog growled in response.
"Good dog!" I cried.
It growled again. Maybe it found out I was a liar, because that dog was not good.
In the midst of my terror, an amazing idea came to me.
"Come, good doggy!" I told it. "Help me kidnap a 12 year old girl." I shook my walkie talkie in front of me like it was a dog treat. The dog slowly advanced.
"That's right," I told it. "Come on, my pet."
I remembered something that Fintan had told me years ago. Something about dogs being able to smell fear? Maybe he was right.
Slowly, the dog and I walked down the street to the girl's house. I suddenly felt scared. Suck it up, Gethen. You have this amazing dog! All you have to do is let it loose, and it will destroy all innocent beings. I sighed. I was really beginning to love that dog.
When I was just a few houses away when my walkie-talkie cracked. "Gethen, report. Over."
"All is... oooh."
"What's wrong, Gethen?" Fintan asked.
I could not explain it in words. Next door to the girl's house, there was an old man playing with some sort of ceramic doll things. He was halloween-decoration creepy. I couldn't quite place it, but I felt kind of... unsettled.
We locked eyes, and I felt a tingle go down my spine–not in a good way. It was more like a dozen Sanguillisks crawling down my back. I started to sweat.
