"Hey," I said, sitting down next to Will under the tree.

"Hi," he replied, more reserved than usual.

"Wait, what's up?" I asked, sensing the tension in his voice.

"One of my friends got pretty badly injured yesterday. Demon and angel fight."

"Oh," I said, a sinking sensation in my chest.

"Demon magic full to the chest," he said.

I nodded, at a loss for words. "What's Apollo think about it?"

Will snorted. "He doesn't actually care about any of us. He's just annoyed that relations with Hades are rocky enough that he actually has to get involved. He thinks there's gonna be a war, though."

I frowned. my mind turning to Octavian. "Hmm. I know a few demons who would want a war."

"I know angels like that," Will said, pushing his hair off of his forehead. "Troublemakers."

I bumped my shoulder against his. "You know, I bet they'd consider us  trouble makers for being friends."

"Except we're not trying to kill each other."

"That's true." I stretched my legs out in front of me and grimaced. "Ugh, I bet it was Octavian or one of his minions/friends/hit men."

"Not a friend?" Will looked at me out of the corner of his eyes, a slight smile on his face.

I frowned. "Definitely not. But he's high up in Hades' officers, and has been for a while, longer than I can remember, so he's got a lot of people working for him who he's paid or scared into following him. He's literally the epitome of the anti-angel mentality."

Will laughed. "Sounds great. Maybe I'll meet him one day."

"He'd probably try to kill you."

"I can defend myself," he said, waving a hand nonchalantly.

I looked at him skeptically. "How? There's a reason the demons have won all the wars we've had so far." Provided, there'd only been two, but still...

"Just because we don't have magic doesn't mean we can't stab you," Will replied, grinning. "Or shoot you. Shooting is kind of preferable I guess, 'cause there would be less blood."

"Charming," I said. "You are horribly morbid for an angel."

"Thanks."

"Not a compliment."

"I don't care." Will smiled serenely, shrugging.

I rolled my eyes playfully. "Whatever."

"In all seriousness, though," he said, letting the smile slide from his face. "Maybe...I don't know. Maybe..."
