It was Izuku's fifth birthday when he discovered his place in the world.

The day seemed like any other. Since Onyx lived for so long, birthdays weren't too special of an occasion. Age was a source of pride for the draconic people, so they kept track of their birthday, but aside from a few milestones, they weren't really celebrated. And the age of five wasn't special either, so there was no real fuss amongst the household.

But Izuku didn't mind. It was another year he spent happy, another year of boredom. He'd take that over anything else.

After four years, he'd learned to sense his Magic and use it without long chanting cast times. His Magic, both Fire and Light, were Pure Magics. He had full control over both Elements, meaning he had access to far more Magic than even some of the strongest people in the world. Of course, it wasn't some fast track to power. Sure Izuku had the raw talent, and plenty of Magic Essence, which this world called Lumina- it functioned identical to the concept of "Mana" - but the actual use of Magic could be complicated if you didn't know exactly what spell or process you were trying to invoke.

One of the books he found spoke about making a spear of fire, which had some sort of mass to it, but everytime Izuku tried creating it, the fire was just in the shape of a javelin, with no actual force behind it. It wasn't until he found another book, which had the chant for the spell, as well as the basics about it, detailing some of the properties of the Magic. After that, he had to learn to compress his Lumina and then further imbue it with Fire Magic. Only once he practiced could he then start calling upon the Magic Attack without putting too much thought and time into it.

Point being, a lot of theory and knowledge went into performing Magic even with the Onyx, who were capable of silently casting Magic and inherently sensing and controlling their own Lumina. Although, it sounded like most Onyx children had an easier time getting a hold of the theory just by pure instinct, so Izuku wasn't sure if he was ahead of the average or behind it. All he cared about was having a few basic attacks ready in case he needed to defend himself.

One thing Izuku was dying to get his hands on was a Magical Recognition System. It was really just a gemstone, which reacted to a blood sample and displayed a bunch of information about the blood it sampled. It could even tell you your Lumina affinity.

Lumina wasn't just a singular energy. It was more like its own life form. Izuku never bought much into spirituality, so he didn't have much to compare it to aside from the Force in Star Wars. It was one of the few movies he'd ever seen. It was an organism that perpetuated the entire world, and it bonded with some people differently than others. Your Lumina could help push you in a direction to specialize in. It may be more suited for close combat, or ranged combat. It could be more for support or offense. And a dozen other different specialities. But because you could theoretically use Lumina for whatever you wanted, it was difficult for an individual to find their Lumina type by trial and error like with Magic types.

Izuku could use his Fire Magic to make long-ranged attacks, but his Lumina might be more adept at creating barriers or melee combat. In most of the books he read, Lumina typing only became apparent to someone in the heat of battle, that minute difference that could mean life or death. Izuku wanted to avoid finding out like that. He'd rather find out in a safe environment and create strategies from there.

He'd already asked his mother and Toshinori for a Magical Recognition System, or MRS, but they were in short supply. It had something to do with the Ivory and the Terran, two of the world's species, being at odds over trade routes and knowledge. As Izuku understood it, the Terran had the finest craftsmanship, but the Ivory had the greatest understanding of Magic, and the MRS couldn't come together without some effort from both species. So anyone who could was hoarding them, either for their own use or to resell at a much steeper cost. It was hard enough to even find someone in possession of an MRS and was willing to sell it. So on that, Izuku would have to wait.
