A/n: I feel like I've been gone forever!! I'm sorry about that, but hopefully, the chapter makes up for it.

TW: mention of scars, sh, and disordered eating.

Summer in New York was not how the movies portrayed it; the weather was insufferable and the streets were filled with tourists from all over the world. You were glad to see new people visiting and getting a taste of the magic of NY, but at times, especially when you wanted to go out to dinner, parks, or certain shops, the number of people was overwhelming.

On the other hand, you've had the opportunity to tan outside on the terrace. Sebastian has been spending an awful lot of time with you. You've rarely had that kind of close friendship in which neither of the people gets sick of the other one. You both know when it's too much and give each other distance. Even when you're together, you sometimes need a break, and you'll both go on your phones or do something different from one another, and it's never awkward.

Besides Bastian, you've been hanging out with a girl you met before you left to see your parents. You met each other at a pottery class you signed up for. Her name is Marina, and funnily enough, she's queer too, but she has a boyfriend. You did kind of have a crush on her at first but it eventually evolved into a friendship. She has been coming around a lot lately to have lunch or to go to a workout class with you.

When you woke up this morning she texted you to invite you to a pilates class. You went to a new studio uptown and had breakfast at a nice cafe.

After, she came home with you to spend the rest of the day together. You planned to paint some of the pottery pieces you made, cook, and maybe watch some movies afterward.

Once you got home to your apartment you each put your swimsuits on to tan a bit and relax.

Of course, your scars were a point of conversation at some point, as you didn't want to catch her off guard. She understood and was very empathetic about your mental health situation and issues.

You laid down on the two sun beds on the terrace, put some music on, and tanned in silence.

Marina was focused on reading her book and you were lying down on your chest without your bikini top to tan your back flawlessly.

"What's your book about?", you asked, turning your head to face her.

"Just another basic romance... They met in high school, they drift apart, and find each other like ten years later or something".

You just hummed in acknowledgment.

"I need more ice, do you want anything from inside?".

"I'm good thanks", you answered.

While waiting for her to come back, you started hearing some chatter inside the apartment. You assumed that Jack, her boyfriend, had FaceTimed her or something.

"Y/n", your friend said in a sing-song voice, which you thought was weird.

"What is it?", you asked nonchalantly while resting your head on top of both of your hands which were on the sun bed.

"Surprise!", you heard a deep voice say, a voice you instantly recognized.

"Cate?", you said, turning your head to see if your assumptions were right. They were.

"Cate! Omg!", you said in an excited tone.

You quickly sat up, your back facing them, and put your oversized shirt on quickly, as you were topless. It was long enough to cover your thighs.

Once you turned again, she was beaming from ear to ear and her arms opened for you to embrace her.

"How are you? I had no idea you were getting here today!".
