This night, Leike experienced nightmares. She dreamt about being alone in the dark, on a vast field of frozen grass. The wind howled, and despite screaming her lungs out, not a single voice reached her. Darkness enveloped her, making her feel as if she was choking. The ground was unstable as a swamp, pulling her into the cold soil; she couldn't move. The world around her started to shrink, putting her deep into the abyss.
She awoke covered in sweat, breathing heavily. The sense of solitude left her anxious. Unable to go back to sleep, her mind revisited her most painful memory; when Sharp left her.
---- 5 years ago, Middle of March year 1886
Sharp's rehabilitation showed little progress. His leg remained broken, defying any attempt at remedy. Leike dedicated herself to him daily, temporarily putting her work at the Ministry on hold. She slept next to him every night, helping him whenever he had to move or when she heard he was feeling pain.
Unfazed by the sacrifice, Sharp was the dearest person in her life—a sanctuary of happiness and peace and the only person that she truly cared about. Seeing him in such condition was excruciating.
As time elapsed, Sharp sank deeper into depression, especially when recognizing the sacrifice Leike made for him. He cared for her deeply, always desiring the best for her, convinced she deserved nothing less. Despite his own struggles, he yearned for a brighter future for her. His emotions, no matter how much would be hurt, seemed like a small price for what she could achieve and become as an Auror.
As Sharp's condition improved to the point where he could at least limp on his own, he decided to return to work as an Auror. Unfortunately, the Ministry stated that he is unfit for active duty and offered him a desk job, which he immediately declined.
Leike waited for him in his room at the Auror's building, but his somber expression upon arrival signaled that the conversation hadn't gone well. Sharp sat on his bed, staring numbly into the air.
"They didn't agree," he started, weighting each word. "They want me to work behind some bloody desk."
Leike felt relief that he wasn't fired outright; nevertheless she knew it wasn't easy for him to hear these news. She kneeled in front of him as he was sitting on bed, taking his hands in hers.
"It's always better than nothing," attempting to cheer him up, she expressed her will to stay with him wherever he will go. "I can get relocated to the office too; I am sure they will agree."
Sharp turned to her. Leike never saw him like this, seeing him in such despair, tore her apart. He hold her head, laying a long kiss on her forehead.
"I am sorry." Looking in her eyes, he made the decision. "Leike, I would like to be alone now," he said quietly.
Unable to find words, she simply nodded with tears in her eyes, and left his room. Days passed, and he still didn't show up.
Frustrated, she went to the Ministry to advocate for his rights and convince them to reconsider. To her dismay, she learned that he would be transferred to Hogwarts. Rushing back to his room, she found it empty, with a letter addressed to her on his used to disorganised desk.
"My dearest Leike,
I couldn't find enough confidence to say goodbye to you in person. I must leave to find a cure for my disability. Until then, I'm afraid it's for our good that we won't stay together.
