chapter three | death breath?
————————————————————————

"a bike shack, right where my house used to be," reggie said, as the ghosts were standing on a beach, and in front of the now bike shack. junie was still stood next to alex, her arm linked with his as his hands were in his pocket. "right here."

"yeah, i'm sorry man," luke said as he patted reggie's chest, tying to comfort him.

"they made the meyersons' house into a noodle shop, why couldn't they make mine into a pizzeria or something?" reggie questioned, and all juniper could think about was pizza - man, she missed eating food.

"they tore down the whole neighbourhood like 10 years ago i think, sorry reggie," junie said as she looked over at reggie with a sad smile. he looked over at her and smiled, making her stomach turn slightly as she felt her cheeks heat up.

"i guess my folks are gone," reggie said defeated, and alex turned to look at him and correct him - "no, everyone's gone. twenty five years, gone. friends, family, bobby, everyone."

"bobby, that's right. i guess that vegetarian lucked out. what do you think happened to him?" reggie said, and luke answered from the log he was sitting on.

"he probably just got old like everybody else and moved on," he said, making alex look over at him, moving slightly closer. this meant that there was a gap between him and reggie, so juniper moved in between them and rested her hand on reggie's arm to comfort him.

"dude, how are you so causal about all of this? don't you wanna figure out what happened?-"

-"let's be real for a second," luke cut alex off, "it's not like any of us were that close to our families. my folks always regretted buying me that guitar. reggie, your parents were literally a fight away from a divorce. alex, your parents were never cool again after you told them you were gay. and junie, judging by the frown on your face, i'm guessing you weren't close with your parents either?" luke questioned, making juniper shake her head, answering luke's question with a silent no - a frown evident on her features.

"okay, none of us had it great," alex cut in," but at least we had something! you know, what do we have now? and before you say cool teleportation skills, just know, i'm not entirely okay with that either, alright. it tingles, in weird places!" alex finished, making juniper scrunch her nose up at him.

"i'll tell you what we have," luke said, standing up and walking towards the ghosts, "it's what we've had since the day we came together. boys, we have us. and now we have junie too! okay, we're the only family we're ever gonna need." he said, making juniper smile at the fact that luke thinks of her as family. "you know what else we have?"

" i'm gonna guess death breath?" reggie said, making junie hide her smile and hit him on the arm.

"our music, you dork," luke said, laughing. "we have our music, you guys. people, actual people can hear us play. they can't see us, fine, but they can feel us. if i had my guitar, i'd play for all these people right now. just like what we used to do down at the pier."
