DAY TWO OUT OF THIRTY ONE

DECEMBER 13, 2014

FOUR DAYS BEFORE WINTER BREAK.

12:30 P.M. LUNCH TIME.

ARABELLA'S POV

"Wow you look happy." Nick laughs as I sit down across from him.

"As you can tell, I'm ecstatic."

"What's wrong?" he leans on the table.

"I'm just really stressed."

Which, was true. Every teacher I've had today have decided to give us a test tomorrow, not even giving me time to study.Adding on to that, I'm failing math and if I don't raise it up soon, I'm stuck in this grade for another year. Like, what would knowing who solved the first 'unsolvable' math problems do? It's not like someone's going to break into my house and threaten to kill my family unless I can solve the problem by answering a stupid question.

"Why are you crying?" Nick grabs onto my hand.

''It's just," I take a really deep breath, trying to calm myself down and hopefully get rid of this panic attack.

"Come on, once the bell rings we're out of here. Okay?" Nick threw his food away, never taking his hand off mine. I nod and try to catch my breath again.

"Okay, let's go get your stuff ready and hide you in the bathroom. I'll get you after the bell rings." We start walking out of the lunch room, walking into the halls.

"How many tests do you have?" He asks as I grab my books out of my locker, shoving them in the plain black bookbag I use.

"So far, six." I push my math book in my bag, trying to calm down.

''I'll help you study." Nick grabs the heavy bag from me and says he'll take it to his locker, jogging down the hallway. He soon comes back, breathing heavy.

"You have a brother right?" he asks, sliding down the locker. I nod and turn to him, jumping slightly as I relize how close we were sitting.

"Yeah, why?"

"Call his school and tell them he has a doctor appointment. We'll be there in about twenty minutes." I smile and get my phone out, dialing Gray's school number.

"Hello, Washington state grade school, what do you need?"

"Hi, this is Gray Mitchell's mother calling, Gray has a doctor appointment in a hour. I'll be sending my daughter to come get him in twenty minutes, if that's okay?" I put on a diffrent voice than my own, hoping she wouldn't notice a diffrence.

''That's perfectly fine! See you shortly. Have a good day."

"You too." I hang up, sighing in relief and standing up.

''Let's get going." somehow, when I was on the phone Nick had got our bags and his coat. He already had his sweatshirt hood up, and his jacket halfway on. We leave the school in silence, Nick watching out for ice.

"How'd you know I have a brother?" I ask, breaking the silence when we were almost to his truck.

"We had that one awkward sibling day in eighth grade." he shrugs, looking up in front of him. We reach his truck, Nick opening my door once again.

"Wait we were in eighth grade together?" I turn to him, watching as he grabs the wheel.

"I mean all of grade school but, yeah I guess yeah."

"Oh my gosh really?" He turns his car on. He sighs and starts driving, turning onto the main street.

"Yeah. Does he go to our old school?" I look at his lips as they move, slowly looking up to his eyes.

"Yeah, uh thanks for everything."

"No problem." Nick says, some announcer saying Panic! At the Disco is on next.

"Ooo!"

"Remember our deal." he turns and pokes my cheek.

"Fine, I got the girl's part." I sigh.

"That's the spirit!" I roll my eyes at him.

"Miss Jackson, miss Jackson!"

"Are you nasty?" I sing along with Nick, screaming the lyrics.

👫

"Hi, I'm here for Gray?" I ask the lady at the office, leaning onto the counter the same time as Nick.

"I'm here." Gray gets up from his chair, grabbing his bag and walking towards us.

"So why am I out of school again?"

"We decided to bail you out." I shrug.

"We?"

"Oh yeah, this is Nick."

"I'm Nick." Nick sticks his hand out to my brother.

"Nick's going to be at our house for half of the month, then I'll be at his for the other half of the month." Gray nods, pulling his jacket closer to his body.

"So he's your boyfriend?"

"What, no!" Nick and I said at the same time.

"Then what are you?" For Gray's age, he was very mature.

"Uh, we're buddies." Nick says and he smiles, his hand brushing against my hand.

"Yeah, buddies." I nod.

"I'm missing something here but I'll let it slide. Just let me rub it in your face when you get married." We laugh at Gray, reaching Nick's old red truck.

"So what are we doing?" Gray asks again, flipping the page to his dinosaur book.

"We can go downtown." Nick shrugs.

"Yeah! There's a new record place down there." Nick turns onto a different road.

👫

"Look at how nice this looks." I turn the record over, smiling slightly when I see the band name.

"The Neighbourhood."

"I love you." Nick nods, making me confused.

"It's a nice album. Oh! You thought I was talking to you." Nick laughs, pointing to the record.

"34.78 please." the bored adult says as I hand her two twenties.

"Thank you, have a good day." I say as I get my record and change back, following the two boys out of the shop. From the car ride to now, Nick has ditched me for my eleven year old brother. I trail behind them as they talk about a stupid sport, covering my record from the snow.

"Be careful, ice is to the left." Nick says, pointing to a place right infront of me.

"Thank you."

"Anything for your safety, Princess." Nick says.
