Evangeline sat quietly beside Klein in the car, feeling a bit embarrassed by his unwavering focus on the sonogram the doctor had given them. He seemed to be completely captivated by it, even now.
Evangeline who was unable to contain her amusement chuckled softly at Klein's absorbed demeanor.
"What's so funny?" Klein asked, looking up from the sonogram with a puzzled expression.
Evangeline tilted her head, smiling gently at him. "I'm hungry. Can we grab something to eat? I'm craving a burger and ice cream," she requested.
Klein grinned at her craving and quickly tapped on the driver's partition to order some food from a nearby drive-thru.
Out of curiosity, Evangeline suddenly asked, "Do you like babies?"
Klein was taken aback by the question, as if he had been pulled out of a trance. "No, not really. I'm not particularly fond of children," he replied firmly, causing Evangeline's smile to falter.
She pouted slightly and continued, "Well, if that's the case, can I have the sonogram back?" She held out her palm, expecting him to return the picture. Instead, Klein slipped it into his wallet without a word.
"Denied," he said playfully, taking Evangeline's hand in his own.
His unexpected action caught Evangeline off guard, and she found herself staring at their intertwined hands.
As Evangeline was about to speak, she noticed Klein's attention was fixed on the passing scenery outside the window. Despite his focus elsewhere, he maintained his hold on Evangeline's hand.
In that moment, Evangeline came to a realization – amidst Klein's stoic demeanor and stern exterior, there lay a seed of kindness within his heart.
Evangeline smiled at the notion and allowed Klein to keep holding her hand.
However, when the driver brought the food Evangeline had requested, she instinctively released Klein's hand. The sudden absence of her warmth left Klein's fingers feeling cold, snapping him out of his reverie.
Glancing at Evangeline, who was now fully engrossed in her meal, Klein felt a pang of longing to hold her hand again. But with both of Evangeline's hands occupied with food, he could only lament his decision to give her the meal.
Evangeline glanced at Klein while munching on her burger. "Are you going back to work?" she asked between bites.
Klein chuckled at her playful demeanor and reached out to wipe a stray crumb from her cheek. "Yes," he replied.
Perplexed, Evangeline questioned, "Then why are we heading the wrong way? Your house is the other way."
Klein explained, "The doctor advised against you returning to work immediately, and I recall you're not fond of staying cooped up at home, right? So, let's head to my company instead."
"Really?" Evangeline's eyes widened in surprise.
Klein nodded, pleased to see her brightening mood. Her soft giggles were like music to his ears.
When they finally arrived at MMII, the security staff immediately lined up to greet their CEO, Klein.
Klein got out of the car as soon as it was parked and walked to the other side, opening the door for Evangeline.
"Thank you," she mumbled, expecting to walk into the company alone. However, Klein's wrapped arm around her waist told her she wouldn't be walking in the halls solo.
As Klein escorted Evangeline through the towering glass doors of MMII, Evangeline couldn't help but gasp in awe at the sheer extravagance that greeted her. The lobby stretched upward with sleek, modern architecture, adorned with marble floors that gleamed under the soft glow of crystal chandeliers. A grand staircase spiraled gracefully towards the upper levels, while floor-to-ceiling windows offered a breathtaking view of the city skyline.
The staff, dressed impeccably in tailored suits and designer dresses, bustled about with purpose, their confident strides echoing against the opulent surroundings. Receptionists greeted visitors with warm smiles, while assistants hurried by with tablets in hand, attending to their tasks with precision.
Evangeline's eyes widened as she took in the bustling energy of the lobby, the air buzzing with excitement and ambition. This wasn't just a workplace—it was a symbol of power and success, a testament to Klein's influence and stature in the corporate world.
Klein immediately noticed Evangeline's reaction and smiled proudly as he tightened his grip around her waist. "Impressive, isn't it?" he remarked, his voice tinged with satisfaction. "Welcome to MMII, Evangeline."
Evangeline nodded, still taking in the grandeur of the surroundings. "It's breathtaking," she murmured, her eyes wide with wonder.
Klein led her through the lobby, past gleaming elevators and towering pillars adorned with intricate designs. As they walked, employees greeted Klein with nods and respectful smiles, their admiration evident in their eyes.
They entered a spacious elevator, and Klein pressed the button for the top floor. As they ascended, Evangeline couldn't shake the feeling of awe that enveloped her.
When the elevator doors slid open, they stepped out into a lavish corridor lined with offices and meeting rooms. Klein guided Evangeline towards his own office, the largest and most impressive of them all.
As they entered, Evangeline couldn't help but marvel at the sleek furnishings and panoramic views of the city skyline. Klein gestured for her to take a seat in one of the plush leather chairs, and she sank into it, still overwhelmed by the magnitude of it all.
"Make yourself comfortable," Klein said with a smile. "This is your home away from home now."
Evangeline glanced around the opulent office, with excitement and apprehension. "It's incredible, Klein. Thank you for bringing me here," she said, her voice filled with gratitude.
Klein took a seat behind his expansive desk, his gaze softening as he looked at her. "You belong here, Evangeline. This is just the beginning," he reassured her, his tone sincere.
She nodded, feeling a surge of determination. "I won't let you down," she promised, meeting his gaze with determination.
"I know you won't," he replied, his expression confident. "Now, let's get started. There's a lot to do, and I'm counting on you to help me make MMII even greater."
Evangeline felt a rush of excitement at the prospect of contributing to something so significant. "I'm ready," she declared, her voice filled with resolve.
"I'm kidding. You're not allowed to work. Sleep." Klein suddenly kills the mood as he started working on his desk.
"Huuuh??" Evangeline asked in confusion thinking she was to start work today.
Klein looked up from his work with a mischievous glint in his eyes. "I'm serious, Evangeline. You need rest, especially now," he said, his tone firm but gentle. "Growing a human is hard work."
Evangeline blinked in surprise, processing his unexpected directive. "But I want to help," she protested, feeling a mix of disappointment and confusion.
"I know you do, and you will," Klein assured her, his expression softening. "But right now, your priority is taking care of yourself and our little one."
Evangeline's heart swelled at his words, touched by his concern. "Okay, I understand," she relented, a small smile tugging at her lips. "I'll take it easy for now."
Klein returned her smile, his gaze filled with warmth. "Good"
