Chapter 55

When Klein thought Evangeline was finally giving them some space and privacy, Evangeline suddenly erupted in anger.

"Get out of here! Now!" Evangeline's voice rang through the spacious room, filled with a raw intensity that neither Klein nor Daphnie had anticipated. The sound seemed to echo as it lingered in the air long after the words had left her lips. Her face was flushed with anger and her eyes were blazing with both of hurt and rage, as she pointed towards the door with a trembling hand.

Daphnie flinched as her eyes were wide with surprise and fear. She had never seen someone become like this and was clearly taken aback by the sudden explosion of emotion. The poised and confident woman seemed momentarily lost, unsure of how to respond to the unexpected hostility.

Klein's shock quickly morphed into concern, but then almost immediately flickered of something darker—anger, perhaps, or frustration. He had been blindsided by Evangeline's sudden outburst, not understanding the depths of her feelings or the trauma that had resurfaced in this moment. He had expected a confrontation, maybe even some harsh words, but nothing like this.

"Evangeline, that's enough!" Klein's voice was firm, attempting to regain control of the situation. His eyes narrowed, and his tone was laced with an authority that seemed out of place in their usual dynamic. He reached out to Evangeline, as if trying to calm her, but she stepped back. Her face reflected of defiance and pain as she looked at him.

Evangeline felt as though a dam had burst inside her. All the insecurities and fears she had buried, the trauma of her past with Zach, came rushing to the surface. The sight of Klein with another woman, especially one who seemed to belong in his world, had triggered something deep within her. She felt cornered, vulnerable, and desperately afraid of losing the happiness she had only just begun to believe was real.

Klein looked at her with frustration evident in his eyes. "You're overreacting," he said while his voice was edged with disbelief. "You can't kick her out of my house as if she were some fucking pet."

Evangeline's lips quivered at Klein's harsh words. It was the first time she had heard him speak to her that way, and it cut deeply. The unexpected cruelty in his tone and the sharp words stung, causing a pain in her chest. Blood rushed to her head, and as if all her anger had boiled over, she found herself unable to speak.

Her arm dropped to her side, the fire in her eyes extinguishing into a hollow numbness. She glanced between Klein and Daphnie, her expression shifting from anger to something more vulnerable and broken. Her own thought began to press down on her, and she felt as though the ground had been pulled out from under her feet.

She turned her back on them while trying her best to compose herself. The sting of Klein's words echoed in her mind as it mingled with the haunting memories of her past. It wasn't the first time a man had belittled her, yelled at her, or shut her down. But this time, it hurt even more. Perhaps it was because she had dared to hope for something different, something better with Klein. She had believed in the possibility of a future where she was respected and cherished, where her fears and insecurities could finally be laid to rest.

As she walked away, her shoulders hunched under the weight of her disappointment as a tear slipped down her cheek. The realization that the man she loved could speak to her with such disregard and cruelty was a crushing blow. It felt as though all the progress she had made in healing from her past was unraveling in an instant.

Evangeline silently made her way to their bedroom while her heart ached with every step. She knew she needed to gather her thoughts, to figure out how to protect herself from this new wound. But in that moment, all she could do was retreat and try to keep herself from falling apart completely.
