Leila always liked San Diego: the culture, the beaches, the fun...Her parents would often take her and Angie for the holidays to the city when there were still in middle school. Actually, that was the last time Leila remembered her family was happy and complete.
It saddened her really, this afternoon when they've arrived to the city, the reason of her being here again. They're going to take down her father and she didn't have anything to say against it.
She thought about calling Angie, but she gave up on that idea. What would she even say to her sister? And she was sure that Dylan has already contacted her and ran the plan with her again. Their father has done more harm to them for his own selfish reasons and deserves to die. Hell, Angie must have hated him more than Leila at this point.
As they checked into hotel, Leila found herself at the bar thinking about her life. Maybe Drew was right. Maybe she has a Stockholm syndrom 'cause there is no valid reason why would she choose to stay with Julian.
As the bartender served her another drink she glanced towards the reception and saw Dylan walk by. Maybe he was the reason. It may sound stupid, but his rejection was something that really stuck with her for these last couple of years. And although she did had some taste of freedom which she desired all her life, education, college, he remained to be the missing piece in her puzzle.
And Julian came into her life with the bang, a sudden loss of control that she hated, but deep down needed. Her independency was everything to her, or at least she thought so. After three martinis she was certain that she lost it the day she met Dylan. But unlike him, Julian was a man who knew what he wanted, and he wanted her.
The sun was slowly setting and the race event will be held soon. Emma found her by the bar and sat down next to her.
-"Are you worried?" -she asked seeing Leila lost in her thoughts.
-"No...should I be?" -Leila said not looking at Emma but rather at her drink.
-"I mean...it's your father after all."
-"My father died with my mother. This shell of a man that only looks like him isn't my dad." -Leila explained. -"If Dylan doesn't kill him, I will."
Emma nodded her head. -"I understand."
Leila then turned to her furrowing her eyebrows like she only just remembered to ask: -"Why are you guys even here and not in college?"
-"I could ask you the same question." -Emma countered back softly which made Leila lower her head again focusing on her drink.
-"It's not that simple." -Leila started. -"At first I wanted to protect Jax and Angie...find a way to stop Julian or my father to do any harm to them....but now...I don't know. There's just something about him that's been making me stay by his side."
-"Are you in love?" -Emma asked.
-"I don't think so." -Leila replied almost immediately. -"But in some kind of fucked up way I care about him. He's not as bad as he seems and he really does love me."
-"No doubt about that. I've seen the way he looks at you." -Emma agreed. -"But I've also seen the way Dylan looks at you."
Leila laughed. -"I think you saw what you wanted to see. Dylan never wanted to be with me, it was never serious and we ended it before it even begin. It's his ego that your seeing now...and isn't he with that Carmen girl?"
Emma laughed: -"Drew said that Carmen was only a distraction. A side chick. Guys know that kind of stuff."
-"Well, for a side chick she surely lingers." -Leila commented before gulping down the last drop of her drink. -"Let's go. We have a race to win."
The boys were already at the start when they've arrived. Carmen was standing next to Dylan, holding his hand like her life depended on it. Maybe it did, Leila thought. Nevertheless, the sight made her roll her eyes.
-"Miss Azuro, are you coming?" -Julian called waiting in his car.
-"It's Ariza." -Carmen said, still not moving from her spot next to Dylan.
-"Whatever...we don't have all day." -Julian said as he opened the passinger doors and she finally obliged, kissing Dylan before she sat down buckling her seatbelt.
-"Preston, you take care of my girl." -Julians face turned serious for a moment and Dylan turned to look at Leila without saying a word.
Drew and Emma were already in their car ready for the race to start.
-"Ready?" -Dylan finally spoke to her. She nodded her head and got into the car.
The fire gun went off and the race started.
The silence in the car was eerie and only thing you could hear were the schreeching of the tires and engines around them. Julian was just ahead of them with Drew behind. Other cars were following along, trying to get in front.
All of the turns and speed made Leila close her eyes imagning that she's somewhere else. Somewhere nice...but where?
Then her mother popped in her head. She was wondering how could she ever love her father? She remembered one of the last times she saw her. She was waiting for her to get ready, they were going out to dinner, just the four of them. When everything was right in the world. She was only a girl, but now, in her imagination, Leila was a grown woman standing just outside of the bathroom doors looking at her mother while she was putting on make up.
She was trying so hard to understand her. Why would this woman, who was so loving and innocent, chose this man for a husband?
Leila was wondering is she, as well, like her mother? Sticking with Julian, even betraying her family. But Leila was no innocent by any means. She didn't have that compassion in her. Unlike her sister who took it from their mother. Maybe Leila was more like their father, cruel in some ways just like him, hurting people that she loves, breaking their hearts.
Then she remembered that night. She had a huge fight with Angie about something silly like a dress or a doll. So she came to complain to their mom. And the words her mother said to her rushed to her mind like she's hearing them loud and clear again.
You don't get to choose the people you love, even when they hurt you. Love isn't optional honey. Love is or it isn't.
And then she opened her eyes and looked at Dylan.
