Ten Years Ago
"How're you holding up?"
A plate with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with Doritos was placed in front of me as my new guest sat down across from me. I pushed the plate away as I turned my head to the side not wanting to eat much less talk. I learned that the boy I met in the library Sam was also in this life and it was their dad my dad was on a case with. Our dads had been best buddies apparently.
I was orphaned now, how did he think I was holding up?
"You know, sometimes it's better to let it out," he spoke softly as he put his hand on top of mine resting on the table. I quickly snatched it away looking into his hazel-green eyes.
"I don't even know you," I squinted my eyes at him.
"Well let's start over. I'm Dean," he gave me a soft smile. I couldn't deny that he was an extremely attractive person and the sparkle in his eye made me melt. Or the way he had been caring for me since he saved me from the vampire made me flutter, but I didn't have the energy or the want to get to know a boy.
Sam was different. When we were alone, we talked about how the moment we got the chance, we were running.
I saw the pleading look in his eye and sighed out in defeat.
"Paisley," I whispered.
"That's beautiful," he gave a soft smile. I tilted my head slightly.
"Are you seriously flirting with me? I just watched my dad die a week ago."
"What? No! Of course not!" he defended. "I'm trying to sympathize with you. It's not really my thing."
"Sympathize with me? Dude, your dad is alive," I scoffed. I saw something flash in his eyes but he was definitely good at hiding it. I sat there expectantly waiting for his next move.
"True, but I've seen the parent death thing. My mom," he cleared his throat looking away from me. It was a touchy subject for him from what I could tell.
"Mom and brother. Also vampires," I shot back. "Look, I appreciate your attempt at hospitality, but I don't plan on staying very long. I got plans to get out."
He chuckled, "You don't simply just get out."
"Watch me."
Present Day
"Sam, did you like me when we first met?" I slurred as I kept the opening of the bottle against my lips. He was focused on the tv but quickly shook his head slightly at the random question. It took him a couple hours to get back, and when he did it was starting to get pretty late so we fed Eleanor and he tucked her in in the playroom with Paw Patrol playing. Since then, we had started drinking, I was working on number four, he made some finger snacks and we put on The Notebook.
Noah was so hot and sweet.
"What?" he turned to face me.
I turned my body all the way to face him and sat criss cross applesauce.
"Did you like me when we first met?"
