New Year's

December 31st 2017
It was New Year's Eve and Alex went to Kate's house to celebrate. He went over for lunch and stayed til midnight. Kate's favourite part of New Years was the fireworks and she always got very exited when she saw them. Alex found this incredibly cute.

After dinner they watched La La Land. They then played Clue (despite Alex's protest and wanting to play Monopoly). Alex won though, so that made him happy (Kate seems to win most board games).

They then decided to watch another movie and Kate suggested they watch Moana (again). Alex didn't mind so Kate got up and put in the Moana dvd. They sat together oh her bed watching Moana, Kate resting her head on Alex and Alex wrapping his arm around her. This was a common occurrence yet it never felt weird or romantic as they have known each other for so long .

At 23:45 Alex's mom brought Kate and Alex to Times Square to watch the Ball drop. This was Alex's favourite part of New Years and this was when he got to see Late so happy about the fireworks. Alex's mom wasn't interested in the ball so she left them and went to a cafe nearby to get a coffee.

As everyone was counting down Kate and Alex got more and more excited. They knew it was such a silly thing to be excited about but they didn't care and they were excited together.

When it hit midnight and the ball dropped Alex cheered with Kate. And when the fireworks started Late had a huge smile on her face and Alex admired her in the light. He looked down at her and she looked up at him, they both smiled at each other.

Kate was distracted by all these emotions and how she thought Alex looked really good in the night light with the fireworks behind him, she leaned closer and looked up at Alex again. Alex leaned in too and they both gently pressed their lips together. They had a quick kiss before Alex pulled back. He was confused, he liked the kiss and he had feelings for Kate but he was confused as to why she did it. She had a crush on that other girl.

Kate looked away quickly and admired the fireworks. Alex decided to look around at all the people behind them, looking the opposite direction to Kate. He finally decided to turn around and he saw a slight blush on Kate's cheeks and he also knew there was definitely a little on his too. Alex and Kate were silent on the way home.

Their first day back to school after Christmas break and they talked to each other (they could never ignore each other). They didn't mention the kiss and acted like it never happened. Other than that everything was like normal.

At lunch that day Alex felt a bit jealous. Kate seemed to be looking at Ruby a lot more than usual. He tried not to think about it much. 'Kate is his best friend, the kiss was nothing. She hasn't mentioned the kiss so it wasn't important. She can like whoever she likes, ' he was supportive of whatever she wanted to do with her life and who she had what relationships with. And he knew he'd find someone someday.

Kate had been talking and hanging out with Ruby specifically much more than usual and they both seemed to be laughing and really enjoying each other's company. Alex decided to ask Kate about her feelings.

At lunch Alex and Kate were by themselves as their other friends had either hint to the bathroom, were at a club or out sick.

"Kate?"

"Yeah?"

"You and Ruby have been hanging out a lot and you seem really happy and smiley around her."

"We have? I have?"

"You have and yes, I genuinely don't know how you can laugh or smile that much."

Kate laughs, "So, um, why did you bring this up."

"Well you also seem to look at her and talk about her a lot."

"Alex, What's your point?"

"What I'm trying to ask here is: do you like her?"

"Of course I like her, she's one of my best friends."

"Kate, you know what I mean."

"I think I do."

"Well tell her. Ask her out."

"It's not as easy as you make it sound."

"She looks at you and complements you all the time. She is also quite flirty around you."

"What if we are looking at this wrong and it will be weird because we are such good friends."

"If she's such a good friend, asking her and if she says no, she'd still be your friend. Just go for it."

"Why do you want me to ask her out so badly?"

"You two are cute together."

"Are we?"

"Yeah! You are both so smiley and you always touch each other's shoulders and hands. It's adorable."

"I guess I could ask her before Valentine's Day."

"Exactly!"
