THE DAY WAS as normal as any other one. Natalia hadn't heard from Clay, which hurt, but she had to let it go. He was on some other shit, and she wasn't necessarily sure how to pull him out of this one. It wasn't until she arrived at school on a Thursday morning, he decided to talk to her.

"Nat," He greeted awkwardly as if he wasn't sure how to approach her. She turned to him, her face hard. She didn't really want to do this, but the longer it took, the harder it would be to talk everything out.

"Yes?" Natalia quizzed making Clay let out a small sigh. He knew he was in the wrong, and he knew only an apology would make things right.

"I'm sorry. I just... I wanted to protect you. I wanted to fucking kill him. I saw your face. I knew you were scared and then you ran out with Jess, and... things got rough," Clay apologized. Natalia folded her arms and stepped forward.

"You called me your girlfriend when you were arguing with him," Natalia told him and she narrowed her eyes. "Why is it when every time I'm in distress, that's when you want to claim me?"

"I've been meaning to ask. It's just everything has been fucking crazy, and then we had sex, and that happened," Clay rambled on causing a couple people to look at him funny, as if they weren't sure if they heard him right.

"It's okay. I accept your apology, but I don't think we should be in a relationship until you've figured everything out. You're clearly not in the mindset to handle me as your girlfriend," Natalia said to him and he nodded disappointedly. "That doesn't mean we still can't see each other."

"Okay, Nat," Clay mumbled dejectedly. "I'll see you after school."

Natalia nodded and left him first. It had always been someone else walking away first. She had felt powerful putting Clay in his place, knowing that he was the one that was sorry. Now, she had to go to class. Which, unbeknownst to her, would be the last time she'd ever feel completely safe in the school, even the sliver she had left would be taken away.

NATALIA SAT BESIDE Tony, leaning across the table to look at what Alex had been reading. It was a wonder having Tony to help with Spanish homework. In return, a long time ago when Natalia was still a straight A student, she'd do his math homework. Now, not so much.

"Ok. 'Es dudoso que... lloverá mañana.' What?" Alex asked, regarding the Spanish he'd been reading.

"What?" quizzed Tony. "Nothing."

It was certainly something because even Natalia knew he had butchered that sentence.

"See, you're using 'que,' so it has to be the subjunctive. The subjunctive mood can also be used when expressing a speaker's feelings about a perceived reality. 'Im sorry you're cold.'" Charlie explained. "Siento que tengas frio."
