— Gravity
HIS HANDS LIT a trail of fire amongst her skin as they roamed aimlessly in the dark of the night. Soft words exchanged between the sounds of people passing by out on the city street. Their world was as big as the two of them, gravity pulling them together.Clay and Natalia seem to grow as close as ever the more they grew into an older age. From college commutes to late nights in one another's dorms, their roots intertwined.
It was on Natalia's twenty third birthday, Clay had proposed. She knew what to respond as she stooped down to his level to embrace him in the candlelit restaurant.
For once in a long time, Liberty High seemed class of 2018 seemed to have a reunion, and it was taking place at Natalia Bexley and Clay Jensen's wedding.
After being walked down the aisle and the first dance, Natalia sneaked away in the midst of festivities, her white dress trailing behind her as she sat on the ledge of the roof, legs dangling. Her whole body was dangerously close to the edge, but she didn't care.
She enjoyed the silence and the peacefulness. She'd do anything to get out of doing the cupid shuffle.
The door of the roof opened and closed. It was Clay, of course. Who else would follow her like a puppy?
"Hello, Mrs Jensen," He greeted as she swiveled to face him. She smirked and stood up to grab his hands.
"It's beautiful tonight," Natalia whispered, now holding his face close to hers. "I'm glad to be standing here as your wife. I'm glad to be standing here at all."
"Hey, is everything okay?" Clay asked and she nodded.
"Just thinking is all," Natalia smiles, brushing his cheekbone with her thumb. "This is all just so real. You, me. Us. This is how it was supposed to be."
Clay nodded and grabbed his wife by the waist.
"I never liked parties," Clay murmured into the night air. Natalia caught on and liked what she was hearing.
"Are you saying we should leave?" Natalia quizzed mischievously. Clay shrugged with a glint in his eye she recognized like the light freckles on his face.
"It's our wedding. We can do what we want," Clay said, lacing his fingers with hers.
"Alright then," Natalia obliged and he lead the way. Out of the building past their family.
When they were in front of the banquet hall, the streets of downtown LA were lively tonight as they made their exit. It felt as fate had pushed them out of the building.
Jessica, Charlie, Zach, Alex, Courtney, Ryan, Ani, and Tyler all stood in a huddled group, immediately noticing their presence as they stood there hand in hand.
"They'd be the ones to leave their own wedding, wouldn't they?" Courtney jeered as she stood with a cigarette in her hand.
"She's in her edgy Lesbian phase, don't mind her," Ryan excused her and Natalia chuckled at his words.
"Pay up," Alex mumbled to Charlie who handed a twenty to his husband.
"Hey! You bet on us?" Natalia scolded and Alex gave her a bashful look. "At least tell me what it's about before you exchange money in front of me."
Alex let out a chuckle out of relief.
"I just had a feeling neither of you would last here long. You guys have never been fans of attention," Alex pointed out and Natalia nodded.
"Fair," Clay agreed.
"I stashed a slip dress in my cousins car, wanna get out of here and get some drinks?" Natalia asked and everyone shared an agreeable look.
"On it," Ryan told them, going onto his phone to find the closest bar. It wasn't long before he found one.
When they walked in, Natalia felt relieved she wasn't in her boisterous gown anymore. It wasn't anything she really wanted. Her aunt had picked most things out. She just wanted to make everyone happy. On her day, ironically.
Clay led her in by her hand.
"What do you want?" Clay asked, getting his wallet asked.
"The dirtiest martini you've ever seen," Natalia replied with a smirk that he appreciated.
The bar was lit by fairy lights, it was a cozy place. She could see herself on a date night with Clay.
Just then, it hit her.
He was hers. Forever. There had been no denying their love before, but now it felt like they'd be infinite. There was no stopping this feeling that had this spell cast over them and they didn't mind.
Their love was indefinite, inevitable. If they were predictable, they didn't care. They had history and shared trauma. They knew everything about one another. They trusted one another with everything.
This marriage, with or without it, probed what everyone saw from the beginning. For better of for worse.
They've seen one another at the brink of hell, the fire of the depths nipping at their heels, yet here they were.
Clay say Natalia's drink down on a napkin, he looked around for their group of old friends.
"What are they doing?" Clay asked while his wife took a ginger sip of her beverage.
"Darts. Charlie insisted he can beat Jess," Natalia responded before setting her drink down. "I'm scared."
She said it so casually, Clay almost glazed over her words.
"What? Why? What happened? Did I do something?" Clay panicked and Natalia chuckled, resting her hand on his forearm.
"You did nothing. I just want to be perfect for you. What if I can't do that? What if our story ends in a way we don't want it to?" Natalia asked and Clay sighed, sitting in the chair beside her, engaging her full attention.
"We write our own story, Nat. Always have, always will. That's us. Except now we share a last name," Clay told her and his voice had been laced with undeniable truth.
"Fine. You've calmed me down," Natalia murmured.
"I believe that's the vodka, hun," Clay smiled and the woman clicked her tongue, amused with him.
Natalia hopped up from her seat and grabbed her husband's hand.
"Let's not exclude ourselves from this narrative. Let's write our next chapter. Exclusively featuring a viscous game of darts starring Jessica Davis and Charlie St. George," Natalia giggled as she dragged Clay along as she looked back with her famous smile.
In her head, she silently wished three people who she couldn't quite forget at times like these. She knew they were there. Watching smiling at their successful matchmaking. Justin. Jeff. Hannah.
They were there. They wouldn't miss this for the world.
