— Girlfriend
AGING WAS A hard pill to swallow. Time moved quicker and quicker for Natalia. Her life had been changing and her future was still unwritten. Things could go very smoothly if everything works out the way they're planned. If not, well, Natalia knew her friends along with herself would live a miserable life, if not.Prison wasn't something she wanted to endure. It wasn't something she wanted Alex, or Jess, or any of their twisted clan to experience. It was scary, this unknown world they were moving into.
Natalia sat on Clay's bed, behind him as he broke the news to everyone. Including herself. She couldn't make eye contact with him as she sat in the silence that followed. He'd been the one who spray painted on the doors, he'd been the one to set a car on fire, he had been the one who sent the email, who did a number of things to scare them.
"Jesus, Clay," Jessica breathed out. "You're gonna destroy us."
"I'm sorry," He apologized. Natalia swallowed as he continued. "I wasn't in my right head for a long time."
"Foundry's interviewing every single person," Jessica told Clay. "He's gonna find out why Clay's been doing all that shit."
"So what? So, they interview us all one by one. We just lie. I mean, we all know how to do that," Tyler pointed out. How long could they keep this lie up? As long as they could take it? As long as they wanted to be free? "I got pretty good at it."
"Might not be the answer, speaking from experience," Ani butted in.
"They talked to Diego today," Jessica added.
"And you have Diego handled, right," Justin asked, his tone bitter as he stared down at his hands.
"Here's the thing," Clay began. "Diego's on to us. So is Estela, so is Winston. Foundry heard the tape, and now he's interrogating the whole school, starting with Diego, and who knows what he said."
"They're only doing this because of the parents," Charlie reasoned. "My dad told me all the Boosters have been calling him. They asked for an investigation, and the school caved."
"So, we are dead," Clay mumbled.
"Well, what if we just... got our parents to trust us again? Get them on our side," Natalia suggested.
"But they have, like, computer stats on how much we lie to them," Jessica rebutted. "How do we get them to trust us now?"
"Come clean, or as clean as we can get without fucking everything up," Natalia responded causing some silence amongst their little group. "Just enough to get them hooked."
"We're in a war here, Nat," Clay pointed out.
"Yeah, well, we're losing and we need to earn back their support. If we have them backing us, we might have a chance," Natalia remarked.
