'How is she?' Katy said as she got to the hospital. Jessie and Mary were at the hotel, while Tamra was flying into London on the next available flight. Katy is a hot mess right now. How did she not sense that something was wrong? Why did she not meet Alison at first when she found out about the switch?
'To be honest with you Miss Hudson, she is not doing too well. She had been physically, mentally and sexually abused for a very long time. We are still undergoing blood tests for her to make sure non of her wounds are infected and that she did not catch any STIs.' The social worker explained.
'How did this all happen?'
'Her father spiralled downhill when his wife died. Mr Moore started drinking and gambling excessively, losing his job and all his savings. Alison was pulled out of school and since then she was abused.'
'So she has been hurt since she was three?'
'Unfortunately yes...'
'How did you find out?'
'Alison's father owed a lot money and got tracked down by the gangs. Luckily they pitied her and called the police. It is totally inhuman and unfair that she had to go through this.'
'Can I go see her?'
'She had just fallen asleep. God bless her... she was terrified when she was brought in here, thinking that everyone was going to hurt her...'
'How long will it take her to fully recover?'
'It might not possible for her to fully recover. She might always be mentally scarred. All we can hope for is for her to be loved so that she may trust again.'
'And will I be able to bring her home?'
'Yes. I will sort out the adoption papers for you as soon as possible, but before Alison can be yours, we will have to pay you a home visit just for her safety. The board fully trusts you of course, but it is one of the procedures that we must go through for every adoption. As I understand Alison is your biological daughter?'
'Yes. My daughter and Alison were switched in the hospital... It's all a long story, but yeah... we are related and I am her biological mother.'
'I understand. Miss Hudson would you like to return to your hotel for the time being? You can come back again tomorrow morning to see her. I advice that we let her sleep as she is exhausted. She hasn't been able to sleep since she got here.'
'Of course... I'll come back tomorrow morning.' Katy said in pain as she gathered her belongings and left the hospital.
'Mommy!' Jessie screamed as her mother re-entered their hotel room.
'Hey Jess... Are you jet-lagged?'
'Maybe?'
'Are you tired yet honey? It's midnight now.' Katy said as she hugged her daughter.
'Nope! Mommy I want to play.'
'You're jet-lagged Jessie... we all are.' Mary commented.
'Mommy why are your eyes red? Have you been crying?' Jessie asked curiously when she got a closer look of her mother.
'Mommy's fine. How are you?' Katy said before she tapped her little girl's nose.
'Mommy I know when you're upset... What happened?'
'It's nothing... really, mommy's fine.'
'I can handle it mommy, please tell me what happened. I don't want you to be upset... I love you. Please tell me...'
'Okay alright... You won't stop asking until I give you an answer will you?' Katy said as Jessie shook her head vigorously, staring at her mother with big puppy eyes. You remember when I told you about the little girl here? I just went to the hospital to see her... and she is not doing well. I feel so bad for her. She is just a little girl like you, she deserves to be treated like a princess... not how her father treated her...' She continued.
'What did her father do to her?'
'Her father hurt her when he shouldn't... and I just feel really... really bad for her...'
'Mommy but it's not your fault... you are the best mommy ever...'
'I love you babes, but I could have done something to help her maybe a little earlier so that she will not have to suffer for so long...'
'Don't think about it anymore mommy... come on let's go sleep, you look very tired...'
'Of course babes... I'll be with you in a while. Mommy just needs to talk to grandma.' Katy said before giving her daughter a kiss and sending her off to the bathroom to brush her teeth.
After singing to Jessie until she fell fast asleep, Katy and her mother Mary went into the bathroom to talk about what happened.
'How is she?'
'Mom I feel so bad... this is all my fault...' Katy cried in pain as she reached for a hug from her mother. 'If I had just met her, I would have known. I would have known!' She sobbed. 'Why didn't I listen? You all told me to meet her, but I said no... why?'
'Katy seriously stop it! Blaming yourself or whatever right now is not the main thing to do! How is she?'
'I don't know... I haven't really seen her yet. When I got there, Alison was sleeping. The social worker said that she is very tired and she is scared. Mom she thinks that everyone is going to hurt her!'
'Katheryn calm down! I know that the situation is not ideal, but we are going to help her.'
'Only if she lets me help her. Mom I just cannot keep my mind of this. Just think about this. Imagine if the switch did not happen, it will be Jessie right there right now! Jessie will be the one that is hurt! But now the one hurt is my blood! But if it didn't happen, it will be Jessie... I am constantly thinking about this and my brain just won't shut down! I feel like my head is going to explode and... and like.. what if I am not good enough to help her? What if she hates me?'
'Stop it! Katy you haven't even met her yet! Just breath and go to sleep! We will all go with you tomorrow to the hospital to see her. Maybe let Jessie meet Alison, maybe that will help?'
'I don't know-'
'Katy go sleep now! It's late. Everything is going to turn out fine! Stop worrying! I love you little feather. Now go get some sleep.'
