Meelo unlocks the door and the smell of food hits my nose instantly.

"Damn, Erika wasn't playing when she said she was cooking dinner," he comments as he drops my bags and heads toward the kitchen.

"Woohoo!" She shouts as she comes into the living room wearing a Mavs jersey and biker shorts. "Career-high! Career-high!"

I laugh at her excitement over my game. "I guess you were watching!"

"We watched," she tells me as a brown skin girl with long braids walks out of the kitchen holding a bottle of liquor and a bunch of plastic shot glasses. "This is the birthday girl, Carmen!"

"Hey!" I speak and she smiles as she attempts to hand me a shot glass.

"Carmen, this is my boss, Spencer!" Erika introduces us as she looks around. "You just met Meelo. But where is Ashton."

Right on cue, Meelo comes back into the living room. But Ashton won't be here until later.

"He has family in Dallas that he's hanging out with tonight," I answer as I attempt to walk upstairs.

"Wait, where are you going? We're celebrating tonight! And now we have two reasons to celebrate." She comments. "52 points and a birthday! C'mon, Spencer! Stay down here. Get some food and relax."

"I'm going to celebrate the win with my girl," I tell them.

"She can come down here and celebrate too," Carmen says and Erika giggles.

"His girl isn't here," she says before looking back in my direction.

"Oh, hell no! Well come back down here. You don't have to celebrate alone tonight. We got you."

"Nah, I'm good. Yall have fun though!" I say as I walk away and pull out my phone to dial Liv's number.

It rings, but eventually goes to voicemail as I check the time.

"Hey baby! I was just thinking about you. Call me when you get this message." I say before hanging up and plopping on my bed.

Just as I close my eyes to meditate, I hear a knock at my door and figure it's just Meelo with my bags.

"Come in," I say nonchalantly.

"Are you really up here by yourself when we're having dinner downstairs?" Erika asks and I jump at the sound of her voice. "Come back and enjoy the evening with us! Please, we don't bite!"

I shake my head no. "I'm tired."

"C'mon! How about a slice of cake? It's way too much for just three of us to eat!" She pokes her lips out and pouts jokingly as her hand pulls at mine. "It's red velvet."

I move my hand and she smirks.

"Just save me a slice," I tell her as I think about my mom's infamous red velvet sweets.
