Detective exam

*may have spoilers for season 6*

You sat in the main roll call room of the station quizzing Lucy for her exam.

"Alright and where is this?" you say holding up a picture of a random street corner.

"Uh. I'm not sure they are going to ask a question like that on the oral exam." She says

"They might. I'm the detective here. Where is this?" You say holding up the same picture

"I don't know." Lucy says shaking her head in self disappointment

"You live on this street Lucy. Look closely take you time. You'll do great." You say standing up

"What. We arnt done where are you going?" Lucy asks stressed

You raise your eyebrows and open your eyes wide. "I'm going to get some work done. You should do the same."

"You're right sorry." She says "thanks for the help"

You nod as you go to your desk by Angela. "So. You think she'll be joining us soon?" Angela asks as you open your computer

"I don't know. She great and knows the stuff. It really determines who's holding the exam." You say

"But she is studying with you. Didn't you get top of the list when you took the exam?" Angela says and you smile.

"Yeah. But I took the exam 7 years ago. Who knows what could happen now." You say

You both get to work and all of a sudden Lucy come running up to you.

"Y/N! Y/N! We have a major problem" Lucy come in yelling.

"What?!" You ask worried something went wrong on patrol

"My exam was moved to today! I'm gonna be late!" She yells

"What are you doing standing around here?! Go!" You tell her and she runs to her car and drives to the building it's being held in. She waits hours for her turn until finally.

"Lucy Chen" the receptionist calls and Lucy stands up and goes to the back room where the test is being taken.

"Hi I'm Lucy Chen fro-" Lucy says

"I understand you have been training to be a detective for awhile and worked on a few cases." He says

"Yes I have. With Angela Lopez and y/n l/n" Lucy replies.

"Ah some of the best. But I also understand you made a crucial mistake during a crime scene loosing critical evidence."

"Um yes sir. The sprinklers went off before I could turn them off cause evidence to literal float away. But I was still able to get a full confession

The exam goes on and Lucy feels more and more worried about what the result might be. She drives back to the station and come back up you your desk.

"How did it go?" You ask as she walks in

"I don't know." She pauses "that's a lie. They brought up the evidence mishap."

"Well if they can't see that you could make a great detective they are blind. You will do great. Go home get to sleep the list will be posted tomorrow." You say as Lucy nods her head and walks out

"L/n" Grey calls and wave at you to come into his office.

You walk in and he shuts the door. "What do you need sir I was about to clock out."

"Yeah this won't take long." He says handing you a paper. "This is the list for the detectives exam."

"She got 17th?" You say shocked "but she did amazing on the written test."

"Yeah but according to the instructor not too great on the oral." He says as you roll you eyes

"Bullshit." You say walking out list in hand

"L/n I need that back"

"Yeah I'm a minute"

You drive to where the test was held hoping that the instructor was still there. "Hey sir?" You say getting his attention

"L/n? What can I do for you?" He asks in a cheerful tone

"I need you to look back on Lucy chens oral exam. She deserve a higher placement than 17" you say handing him the list

"Yes but if I recall correctly she made a critical mistake on a case." He says

"And I didn't. You put me at the top of the list when I took the exam. Even though I let a case fall through my fingers. Letting the guy go back out into the city." You say

"Yes but you caught in your first week as detective." He says

"And Lucy caught him as a P2. She will make a great detective if you give her a chance. One mistake doesn't define you sir. You told me that." You say

"I'm sorry y/n. I can't change it now." He says handing the list back

"Than you just lost you best detective" you say handing him your badge beginning to walk away

You get to the elevator "y/n wait." He says causing you to turn

"I'll bump her up to 7." He says as you turn back around

"Alright 2nd! He says as you turn back around walking towards him grabbing your badge back. "Thank you sir. She will make a great detective."

As you walk into the station the next day you see Grey putting up the list on the wall. He looks over at you. "How did you get him to change his mind?" He asks

"Oh easy. I threatens to quit." You say

"What if he didn't change it?" He says startled by the fact you nearly quit

"I knew he would. He can't lose such a great detective" you say smiling widely. You walk to you desk and wait for Lucy to look at the list.

You see her walk in and see the list on the wall. She goes up to it looking at the bottom first making her way up. You can tell when she sees her name in the second slot. She immediately turns to you and pints at the list. You give her two thumbs up as she practically skips to get ready.

"How did you change it." Angela says

"Change what?"

"The detectives list. How did you get him to change his mind about Lucy?" Angela asks

"I put it into perspective. I reminded him of my exam and how I also messed up my first case. He realized his mistake and changed it." You say tweaking the story a bit

"Oh yeah. You didn't have to use the 'I'll quit if you don't' charade?" Angela whispers to you

You look over at her "shut it. Lucy will hear." You both start laughing.
