San had envisioned a millions of ways to spend his Friday night yet, instead, he found himself on his couch, sharing his evening with the nineteen-year-old neighbor boy, Hongjoong, who had appeared at his doorstep an hour earlier. San glanced at Hongjoong, who was now curled up on the couch, looking vulnerable and distressed. He took a deep breath and decided to broach the subject gently.

San began slowly, choosing his words with care. "So, Hongjoong," he asked gently, "are you ready to tell me what happened? I mean..." His voice trailed off, searching for the right words. "Why exactly are you here?" He tried to sound as concerned and empathetic as possible, knowing it was a valid question.

When Hongjoong had arrived, he had been crying uncontrollably. Through his hard, breathy sobs, he had managed to ask, "Can I please come in?" Now at first San didn't want to pry too much, but now that it had been an hour in his curiosity got the best of him and his patience was thinning quickly.

San didn't even know why he was doing this, I mean he barely knew this kid yet seeing him cry made him want to help. Their interactions were limited to brief sightings of Hongjoong passing by his house on his way to and from what San assumed was school. Each time, Hongjoong appeared shy but sweet, often offering to help out in the neighborhood or just always wandering around outside.

To San, Hongjoong was a bit of a weird kid compared to the other teenagers/young adults. Yet, seeing Hongjoong around had become a constant in his routine. He was used to coming home and seeing Hongjoong skipping to his house next door, a fitting smile on his face. This cheerful demeanor was part of the neighborhood's fabric, and seeing anything different was unsettling for San.

Now, seeing Hongjoong with his face streaked with tears and his cheeks flushed from crying was disconcerting. The boy's normally bright and smiling face was marked by sadness, a sight San couldn't ignore. Despite not having a deep connection with Hongjoong, San's kind nature compelled him to invite the boy in without hesitation. Now here Hongjoong was, sniffling and rubbing his eyes, his gaze fixed firmly on his lap as he nervously twiddled his thumbs.

"It's just... my parents. They're fighting—or, well, not really fighting but... arguing," Hongjoong confessed, his voice shaky, his eyes still red and puffy from crying. "Please, please, don't tell them I said that. They would be very disappointed..."

"Why are you telling me, though, if I may ask? Why not go to your friends?" San inquired genuinely, his curiosity piqued.

"I feel like they wouldn't understand me... and my parents didn't want me telling this to anyone else... but I feel like I can trust you... we're friends, aren't we, hyung?" Hongjoong said, glancing up shyly at San across the couch, inching closer.

San had seen Hongjoong and his family around often, as they lived close by in their small town. In such a tight-knit community, word always spread quickly, and everyone seemed to know everything about everyone else. This aspect of small-town life wasn't particularly enjoyable for San, but it was a choice between living here or in the countryside.

Regardless, San was well aware of how strict Hongjoong's parents were, even without witnessing it firsthand. He could sense their overbearing nature and their obsession with maintaining a wholesome, cookie-cutter, perfect family image for the outside world. They were always front and center at Sunday morning services, constantly dropping hints about their lavish spending on luxury items and blah blah blah.
