Running through the streets of Sokovia, fighting robots and saving civilians with Pietro, the team still hadn't devised an actual plan besides saving civilians.
"Cap, you've got incoming," warned Stark.
"Incoming already came in," groaned Steve.
I hit the ground. On my back, I wiggled away from the robot. My hand hit a shattered piece of glass. I shoved my hand through a portal in front of its face and stabbed it through the eye.
"Are you still alive?" I breathed.
"Yes, Clara, I'm still alive," he said, "Are you?"
"Yeah. Is the plan still to save civilians?" I asked.
"Stark, you worry about getting this city back on the ground," said Steve.
I waved my hand for Pietro. He zipped across the street beside me, leaning his ear near my own to hear the orders himself.
"The rest of us only have one job: tear these things apart. You get hurt, hurt 'em back. You get killed, walk it off."
"Oh, yes!" I cheered, snapping my fingers once in cheer. "I didn't miss a memorable speech this time."
"You know, I have to admit I am missing you, Clara," admitted Steve. His happy tone brought a smile to my face.
Disgusted, Pietro's face scrunched, taking a couple steps to give me space.
Sadly, he wasn't the only one to hear Steve's comment. Chiming in with the same feeling, Barton said, "Gross!" and Tony said, "Keep it in your pants, Cap!"
"I forgot to switch channels," apologized Steve, "I'm so sorry, Clara."
Giggling, I said, "Oh, you're fine. I'm on my way."
"You are going to Captain?" asked Pietro.
"Yes. Kick ass, don't get hurt, and save civilians, okay?" I reminded him.
Pietro rolled his eyes. "I will be fine. Good luck, Portals."
"See you later, Sonic."
"Oh, and I'm definitely taking you up on that race," he called, before zipping away from me.
I looked throughout the street one last time. It was cleared of both robots and civilians. Confident it was, I curled my fingers, hopping through a portal to Steve.
The silence in my previous location was stripped instantly, replaced by screams and clashing of metal. Distinctively, the familiar chime of the shield hitting objects hit my ears. The shield was cutting through robots; it was heading for the last one in line: myself.
Just in time, I dropped to my knees. Smashing into the Chevy behind me, the shield came to a stop. I wiggled the shield from the car. Cradling it in my arms, I started to step carefully over robot pieces to my awaiting team members.
"Did you hit the shield with the hammer? That's really impressive," I praised.
"Thank you, Lady Clara," said Thor, proudly smirking.
Squeaking metal turned my attention to the chaos again. Swarming in from our left was a crowd of robots.
Taking the shield from my hands, Steve asked, "Do you know how to back flip?"
Narrowing my eyes, I said, "I do, however, I feel like I should have kept that information to myself."
"How much do you trust me?" he asked.
"Quite a bit."
"Then, trust me here."
Steve planted his feet firmly on the ground, tilting the top of his shield towards his chest and resting the bottom on his knee.
"Please don't kill me," I pleaded.
"You can do this, Clara," assured Steve, "I have the utmost amount of faith in you."
I took a few steps, distancing myself from Steve. I watched Thor, awaiting his signal. As soon as I recieved it, I took three fast steps, jumped on the square of rubble by his feet, then pressed one foot to the shield. He gave me a lift. I maneuvered my body to perform a single flip before I touched the ground, crushing a robot beneath my feet. Crouched, I crossed my arms, surrounding my body with portals that exited to different sections of Sokovia. Unable to see through the one way portals, I listened to the sound of Steve and Thor disabling robots, using my portals to clear our section of broken parts.
"Okay, Clara," panted Steve.
Thor and Steve gave each other a casual bump of their weapons.
Ultron, swooping down from the sky, yelled, "Thor, you're bothering me!" and plucked Thor from the ground by his cape.
Steve and I didn't digress over it. The God of Thunder didn't need our aid, we agreed. Instead, we surveyed the street around us. For the time being, it was free of civilians, but a secondary wave of Ultron's bots would be here soon.
"You think we can finish clearing this section together?" asked Steve.
"How hard can it be?" I responded.
"I like your attitude," he appreciated.
I patted his cheek thankfully. I then hopped through a portal, positioning myself to stand inside of a trunks bed. Again, a wave flew in, ready to attack.
I sent airborne robots crashing into the ground, swallowed grounded bots with portals, split their bodies in half. For however long the wave lasted, it felt as though no matter how many robots I destroyed, dozens more were still waiting for their shot to fight me.
Spotting a robot closing in on Steve from behind, I threw a portal in front of it, sending it into the mass of cars I stood in. As planned, the robot crashed into a car, except, that car happened to be transporting gasoline. Unexpectedly, the truck exploded, flinging my body through the sky and into the windshield of a minivan.
"Clara?" yelled Steve.
"Give me a sec," I groaned.
"All right, we're all clear here," said Barton.
"We are not clear!" said Steve.
Grunts passed through the earpiece, as Steve fought, and I tried to pry my body from the car.
"We are very not clear!" he yelled again.
"We're coming to you."
