I could hear her small whimpers and sobs from the moment I pushed past that door and entered the deserted bathroom, those sounds abruptly stopping.

"Relax, it's just me," I announced, loud enough for her to hear my voice from whichever stall she'd hidden herself in.

No reply came from her as I waited for a moment, so I blew out a sigh and made my way to the opposite wall,  carelessly plopping my butt on the tiled floor.

I didn't bother saying anything more and just waited, listening to her heartbroken cries for a while longer until she finally decided to get out of her hiding.
I heard the small squeal of the stall door being pulled open before she stepped out, gently wiping her cheeks with a tissue.

"That's gross," She said with a grimace and a pointed finger as she turned and noticed my position on the floor, clearly reffering to the fact that my small skirt was barely protecting my ass-cheeks from touching the cold tiles.
"Get your ass away from there before you get a freaking yeast infection or something,"

I mildly snorted and got up nonetheless, watching her head towards one of the sinks and give herself a quick glance in the mirror before she turned on the water and splashed some on her red and blotchy face.

I crossed my arms, patiently waiting for her to clean and dry herself up a little bit before I flatly said,
"Come on, let's get out of this shithole,"

"Where are we going?" She curiously peered at me as I took her hand and started dragging her after me.

"Anywhere but here,"

"But we still have classes," She weakly protested, earning herself an eye-roll from me.

"So? Who the fuck cares, we can make up some excuses along the way," I casually said with a shrug then whirled around and pulled the door open, carefully peering into the hallway for any intruders first before we stepped out.

"All clear," I quietly said after another look then tugged at her hand, coaxing her to fall in step with me as we rapidly made our way to our lockers. And with fast moves we grabbed our stuff and ran away before anyone could catch us, pushing past those double doors of our school's entrance like we did so many times before.
It wasn't our first time ditching school. We've done it so many times in the past, whenever we felt like having some fun instead of just idling around in the classroom.
A little party never hurt nobody, especially in our current situation.

So we took her car as I didn't want to leave my sister stranded at school and made a quick stop to my place first, snatching a bottle of gin from my mom's cabinet before driving off to our special secret place.

**

I got out of the car and followed her as she carried the bottle of gin and bag of snacks with her, taking a seat over one of the three large boulders forming an U shape at the very top of the hill overlooking our entire town, our presence here concealed by the few old trees scattered around.

I plopped my butt right next to her and took a moment to look over our nice and quaint little town, watching the tiny cars move around like in a cute cartoon as she opened the bottle of gin and took a hearty swig.

"Whoah, dude slow down, you're gonna throw up," I jokingly warned with a smirk, receiving a flat look from her.

I let out a chuckle and snatched the bottle from her, taking few small sips as I knew that its taste was super gross without the tonic, letting out a disgusted groan after swallowing it.

I should've grabbed some fucking vodka instead, I shook my head and started searching through our bag filled with snacks and goods, ending up with a small bag of pork rinds.

Silence fell around us as I opened the bag and started munching away, absently staring at the scenery before us when she suddenly started speaking.

"There are...rules and protocols, a lone wolf must follow, should this type of issue ever arise..."

I turned my head to look at her, watching her with interest as she started to explain,
"He's a pack wolf, a very high-ranked one and I..." Her voice abruptly died out, noticing that small tremor of her chin before she swallowed, forcing herself to go on.

"The protocol states that if a lone wolf finds their mate in a pack, they must immediately leave their family, their home to join their mate's," Her voice trembled, swallowing again as she fought those tears.

I frowned at the sound of that,
"Can't he do it instead, like join your family or whatever?"

She mildly shook her head after another swig from the bottle, her gaze absently trained on the world below us as she started to explain,
"He wouldn't be allowed to, he's way too important for the pack to let him go and live as a lone wolf. If he was an omega, maybe, but not as a beta,"

"He's kinda like the king's general, to put it simple,"

"Even if he'd be willing to give up his title, his status and everything to be with me the pack wouldn't allow it,"

"He was born from Beta blood, born to command. It's his birthright and in pack society, you don't get to renounce your birth duties that easily,"

"Especially someone of his importance,"

"And because I'm just a puny and unimportant lone wolf it would be only natural for me to be the one to give up my life, my family and my home to join his pack and everything that comes with it," She let out a whimper, quickly wiping a stray tear that had fallen over her cheek before taking another quick gulp.

"But I don't want that, I don't want to leave my family! I don't want to give up my peace and freedom for that stupid pack life and those idiotic rules!" She suddenly cried out, carelessly slamming the bottle on the stone slab we were sitting on.

Oh shit, My lips pulled downwards to form an awkward grimace as I carefully eyed the bottle for a second, blowing out a small sigh of relief once I've noticed that it was still in one piece.

"So...don't," I simply said with a small shrug as my gaze flittered to her,
"What's stopping you?"

"If you don't want to be with him then don't,"

It didn't have to be complicated. If she didn't want him she could just...ignore him and move on with her life. No one was forcing her do to anything, according to Nathan, a.k.a the soon-to-be king.

Okay, maybe he was an asshole to me but at least he was kind and fair with his...people.

"It's not that easy," She abruptly drew my attention back to her, her voice quiet and sad as she continued to speak,
"We have a bond, now that we've found each other,"

"Our wolves will start yearning to be together. They will drive us crazy if we don't..." I could notice that light shade of pink coating her cheeks as she looked at me, her gaze lowering in a bashful way.

Oh.

So this stupid mate bond or whatever really worked in fucked-up ways for everybody.

Great. That's just awesome.

I lightly shook my head and grabbed the bottle for another sip, letting out another disgusted groan at the feel of that nauseating liquid trailing down my throat.

I blew out a sigh and looked over our beautiful little town, my heart heavy with sorrow as I quietly told her,
"I'm sorry,"

If I had known that my trying to help would have such an outcome, I would've never agreed to do it. Not when I could clearly see that it only made things worse for her.

"No don't be," She rushed to say, offering me a kind smile,
"I've missed feeling her and having her communicating with me. She's been gone for so long, she almost had me worried,"

"I'm so happy that she's back, even though her resurfacing made me discover that my mate's the fucking royal commander," She added with an eye-roll, making me let out a snort and a laugh.
