We arrived at the party already a little tipsy after all those way too many toasts we had back at home, Jess being the only one sober as she was the one who drove us here.
My sister was also kinda drunk as she'd joined us the very moment she heard the words toast and vodka resounding from my room, quickly finding out the reason behind our "celebration", thanks to Kayla's blabbering nature.
We left the car and made that small trek through the woods that led straight to the lake, the booming sound of music growing louder and louder with each step we took.
There were so many people from our school, some I knew and other that I didn't as I casually looked around, noticing some of them dancing whilst others drank from their red cups and mingled around, chatting or having fun playing silly drinking games.
I didn't know why but I simply couldn't stop myself from secretly looking around for him through the sea of people from time to time, barely even registering the moment my sis and Kayla suddenly disappeared from our sides, leaving Jess and I standing there alone like easy prey.
So I grabbed her hand and dragged her with me to the closest keg to at least get some beer for ourselves.
She took a quick and hearty gulp from her cup as soon as I gave it to her, making me realize how nervous she actually was.
"Hey, it's okay dude, I'm right here with you," I gave her a reassuring smile, watching her tuck a stray strand of blonde hair behind her ear as she meekly said,
"Will you...stick with me tonight?"
"Of course I will," I quickly replied, throwing her a confused look.
"I'm actually a little scared," She anxiously admitted after a quick and scanning look at our surroundings.
"Why?" My brows furrowed, watching her nervously chew at her bottom lip and hesitate for a moment, letting out a complaining whine as she started to rapidly explain,
"Because he's gonna be here and there will be alcohol involved and dark...corners and loud music and...sex reeking in the air and..." She stopped herself to let out a long and calming breath, fanning at her face and her chest in an attempt to stop herself from hyperventilating.
"Hey, dude, it's okay. I understand. You don't have to be afraid, I'll stay with you for as long as you need me and then we'll go home together too if you want to, okay?" I was quick to say as I grabbed her arm and gave it a mild and soothing squeeze, receiving a quick nod from her.
"Why are you afraid though? Are you scared that he'll..." lose his shit and make your cheeks clap so hard you'll see fucking stars?
Her gaze widened as if having heard the rest of that sentence that continued in my alcohol-clouded mind, her face and neck flushing with colour as she hurried to defend him,
"No! Of course not! He's actually the sweetest and most gentlemanly guy I've ever met..."
My brows furrowed, now feeling even more confused than ever.
What was the problem then?
"But...?" I said, coaxing her to further elaborate.
"I...don't want to lose my head and..."
Oh.
She was still scared of that natural pull to him. That instinctual need to be close to her mate, like Nathan had explained to me earlier this week.
She was actually scared that she'll end up somewhere in these woods tonight with her ass up in the air and screaming to the stars as he-
Holy shit that sounds kinda hot. Yep, I'm definitely drunk.
I lightly shook my head and blinked, quickly ridding myself of those nasty thoughts.
"It's okay. Don't worry, I'll stick around however long you need me to. We can even go home if you don't want to be here anymore," I offered her a kind smile, receiving one in return from her.
