The night began with heavy winds and fat flakes of snow to descend the starless sky. The streets were covered with patches of darkness as truck headlights were only to color it's path. After dinner, Missy and I had watched her favorite films, but only to have her sleep heavily on my lap. Her arms snaked around my thigh as she always had done when she dozed off on me. I tried to wiggle free, but she only whimpered and held onto me tighter. Since I was stuck on the couch, I grabbed my phone and called Aaron.
Only one ring slipped through before he answered my call. His voice was breathless and husky once he spoke. "Hey, Natalie. Is everything okay?"
"Yea, I just wanted to talk." I said as I started to braid Missy's long, blonde hair.
"Oh, okay. What do you need to talk about?"
"I just...I had the most weirdest dream today." I uttered softly into the receiver.
His tone became worried. "Was it the same dream from before?"
"No, no. It was more...livid and daunting." I quickly gave him a description of the dream. He listened carefully and hummed in an understanding tone.
"Then Missy..." I swiftly looked behind the sofa to check if mom or Xavier were around. I spoke more quietly. "She remembered the dream, Aaron. Missy remembered the promise I had given her in her room."
Aaron was quiet for a moment. The other end was almost soundless; his breathing was calm, yet I knew he was dumbfounded. I could imagine his face stricken with the news: his mouth would be agape with his hooded bright eyes. Almost instantly, I felt guilty for telling him about my nightmare at nearly ten at night. But, I tell him everything. Almost everything, a voice had spoke at the back of my mind.
Finally he replied, his voice doubtful. "I'm sure that wasn't part of the dream. Your brain could have tricked you or something. It's some physiological shit...oh my bad. Sorry."
I rolled my eyes. "I don't think that's how my brain works, Aaron."
"Sure it does." His voice sounded convincing, but I knew he was only trying to reassure me, possibly even himself. "It's all about the physics, Natalie. You're just being paranoid."
I sighed into the phone. "I guess your right."
"Talking to Aaron, I suppose?" A voice from behind had spoken. I nearly jumped out from the couch if I hadn't remembered that Missy was curled on top of my legs. I gazed back to find uncle Xavier with his hair askew and his tired eyes peering back to me. He wore a thin gray shirt and black pajama bottoms. His biceps were large once he'd crossed his arms over his chest, which had me wonder how he could be related to my scrawny self.
"Hey, Aaron, I'll see you tomorrow." We said our goodbyes and I hung up the phone. Xavier strolled down into the living room and sat in a lonely chair.
"Why aren't you in bed?" I questioned. He truly did look tired, as if he'd been working all day. If we didn't have dinner together just a few hours ago, I would of believed he had.
"Why aren't you?" He shot me a jaded look, his sleepy eyes making him seem a lot older.
I looked down to Missy. "She's the reason why. She just won't budge."
Xavier gave Missy a loving gaze, like he truly saw her as one of his own. Considering all the years he had taken care of us, we could have been. Xavier's eyes fell onto me with the same look, but another feeling mixed in as well. He looked away quickly.
