Thursday morning bloomed quickly. A layer of fog stretched across the light canvas to keep sunlight from pouring out. Birds chirped as they flew south, the air chilly and wet. The fog covered the clear windows of the room, the grey color matching the gloomy sky.
I brushed the tangles through my hair unhurriedly as my mind wandered.
Tomorrow was Halloween, which meant Christy's party would begin. I still didn't want to go, yet everyone was expecting me to show up. All I wanted to do was curl comfortingly with a blanket and watch movies with Aaron. Maybe Aaron and I could ditch on the plans.
I laid the hairbrush down and snatched my bag from the bed, plodding down the steps. My feet carried me to the kitchen to find blueberry muffins sitting on the round dinner table. I took one and peeled off the paper as I ate slowly. Once I looked up, I hadn't realized mom had been staring at me. Her eyes were narrowed and her arms were crossed, her posture prepared for a query conversation.
"We didn't have a chance to talk about the boy on Saturday." Mother began, her voice nonchalant but I knew it was otherwise.
I sighed. "It isn't anything to worry about, mom. We just...hung out." I shrugged and walked towards the cupboards, grabbing a cup and filling it with water.
She hummed curiously and arched her brow. "What did you guys do?"
I rolled my eyes with my back to her. "We went to the park."
"Is that all?"
I huff exasperatedly and turned around. "Mom, we did nothing else. Why don't you trust me?"
Her lips parted surprisingly, and I had done the same. Usually, I was respectful towards her.
Her lips came together in a thin line, angered by how I replied to her.
"What's wrong with you, Natalie? Your acting so strange." Her voice was low and outraged.
I gazed at my converse shamefully and twiddled with my thumbs. "I'm sorry, mom. I don't know-"
She continued as if I never spoke. "It must be those dreams. I think you need to go back to therapy and talk to the doctor."
"No, mom. I'm perfectly fine-"
"No your not, Natalie." She spoke sharply. "Your not yourself. It has to be something that's changing you. It..." Her mouth clamped shut. She looked up, then sighed.
"Just, be careful around that boy." She said, her voice softer than they were before. "He seems nice, but...stay away from him for awhile, okay?"
I blinked at her, baffled. Was he so suspicious of a person that it gave both mom and Aaron bad vibes?
The thought clouded my muse.
"Can you do that for me?" Her soft voice asked, her eyes expectant.
I hesitantly nodded, as confusion still pounded in my head. Mother smiled small and stretched her arm out. She caressed my cheek with her thumb.
"Go to school, hun. You don't wanna be late." She said, then left me alone in the kitchen with the full plate of muffins gazing at me disapprovingly.

As I walked to fourth period, dozens of people buzzed around with new information on Christy's party. It annoyed me how people thought she was a goddess. I hoped soon they'll realize she was just like everyone else, or I'd probably go nuts hearing their praises.
