The adults all went off to the living room for coffee and after dinner talk. Rebel then fell in love again. With a gorgeous old upright piano that he hadn't noticed before for some reason. It sat proudly in the corner with a handcrafted doll atop it. He hurried over to it and gently stroked it.
" It's beautiful," he said," may I? "
Pop smiled as he settled himself in his own dark green plaid arm chair next to Ariel's and lit his pipe. " Go head , son. That old thing hasn't been played and played right since my mama was alive. God rest her. Oh Mama loved music. She loved that piano. "
" I miss Meemaw's playing," Dom said wistfully. His brothers agreed.
As Rebel sat on the piano bench he asked," What was her favorite song? "
" Over The Rainbow," Marco said as he remembered his grandmother.
A hush fell over the room as Rebel's fingers tripped out the familiar melody and his prized voice sang the poignant words. Then he was suddenly joined by another voice that seemed to fit his like a puzzle piece. Rebel looked up at Reese Malden who swallowed and stopped singing.
" Sorry," Reese whispered.
Eric's Viking good looking face suddenly darkened and his mouth opened.
Rebel smiled. " Come here, Doc , and help me sing this song. "
Reese flushed slightly. He was about to refuse except that Eric pushed him towards the piano and the Gaines family began chanting his name.
" Yeah , Reese,"Anthony called out. " Show him how it's done! "He hadn't forgotten the bread yet.
" Shut up, Tony," Dom said.
"Yes ," Cassie agreed," do shut up or the sofa will be your home tonight. "
Anthony shut up promptly.
Dr. Reese Malden joined Rebel on the bench as they sang Over The Rainbow in perfect unison.
Rebel was glad Dom had invited him. He was having fun.
