Nike woke up with the noises of the police officers switching turns. It was already late, so she got out of bed and began her morning routine. After eating, the firebender decided to go out for a walk in the city. When she opened the door, her golden eyes met Lin. She became worried and confused.
'I'll be your security detail today,' the chief of police informed the female who felt more relieved after knowing that.
'Really? Just you?'
'Yes,' Lin confirmed. 'Being chief of police has its advantages.'
Nike smiled and then the two benders left the building and headed to the city's park. The firebender couldn't take more than two steps without anyone looking at her with worried eyes. She would have to get used to it. Fortunately, the weren't any journalists trying to take pictures of her. The police had prohibited that to prevent Nike's image from being even more denigrated.
'I never thought I would like the fact you're chief so much,' Nike joked as they walked together through the busy streets. 'Do you think Korra and the others will be able to stop Unalaq?'
'I'm hopeful,' Lin said with a serious voice. She was concerned about that matter as well and just like Nike she would have liked to go with the team, but the President wouldn't allow it.
Suddenly, a strange and dark wave of energy hit them both and everyone in the world.
'What just happened?' Nike asked as she looked around. The wind wasn't blowing before and the streets were calm, but now there was wind and some lampposts short out.
Lin was looking at the skies. They too were changed. Something big and bad was about to happen.
'I guess they couldn't stop it,' Lin finally said.
'Fuck,' Nike cursed under her breath while Lin informed all police units through the radio.
'I have to get the President,' the earthbender spoke. 'You have to come with me.'
'But... near the President?' Nike was confused but Lin assured her that was better than having her with no vigilance since it could be used against her in court.
The benders went to the police station where Lin got her car and drove to Raiko's residence. Soon, every single police officer and ship was mobilized and ready to defend the city.
'Mister President,' Lin greeted Raiko when he opened his mansion's door. 'We need to get you somewhere safe. Nike will be staying with us so I can make sure she won't take advantage of the chaos and flee.'
'What about my wife?' he asked right before Buttercup walked to the door to join the conversation.
'Some of my soldiers will be here shortly and accompany the First Lady to a shelter,' Beifong replied.
Raiko then let Lin and Nike in while they waited for the police team and an airship.
Buttercup was the most worried of the four. She didn't trust the police force completely since they weren't able to protect her when Varick's men tried to kidnap her husband.
'Dear,' she called Raiko, 'can we have a word?'
The couple left the spacious living room while Nike and Lin stayed there sitting on the sofa. They were curious to know what the two non-benders were discussing in the President's office. When Raiko revealed the matter of their conversation to them, they were both shocked.
'My wife would like to have Nike join the police team that will be protecting her, since...'
'Since you protected me that night in the arena,' the First Lady interrupted her husband. 'I would feel safer if you accompanied me and the others to the shelter.'
