'Good afternoon,' a lady dressed in dark formal clothes who presented herself as Dema greeted the people in the trial room at the City Hall. 'We welcome to this court Mister President Raiko representing the United Republic of Nations; Chief of the Southern Water Tribe Tonraq who will be representing both Northern and Southern Water Tribes; Fire Lord Izumi representing the Fire Nation; Grand Secretariat of Ba Sing Se Gun representing the Earth Kingdom; Leader of the Air Nation Tenzin representing the Air Nation. We stand here today to determine whether Nike is guilty of the crimes she is being accused of or not and the consequences the defendant may face.'
Everyone in the room felt silent when the defendant's name was spoken and the firebender accused of bloodbending walked inside the room cuffed and accompanied by four police officers.
Due to the sensitivity of the trial, the press wasn't allowed inside the room. Only the jurors and the witnesses were allowed inside along with the police.
'The charges pressed against the defendant are as follows,' the same lay began talking again, 'bloodbending, violation of bail agreements and assault with battery. How does the defendant plea to these charges?'
There was only silence in the room as everyone waited for Nike to answer the lady's question. Pleading guilty would automatically make her spend some time in jail while pleading not guilty could result in a heavier sentence. Nike's attorney had advised Nike to plead not guilty the night before, but the earthbender was afraid she would not follow her advice.
'Nike pleas not guilty on all charges' Nike's attorney shocked everyone in the room.
'Did she really plead not guilty!?' Bolin asked her brother. 'There were eyewitnesses.'
'Maybe she is hoping to go for a necessity defence,' Asami commented.
'State your name and your parents' names as well, ' Dema said.
'My name is Nike, and I am the daughter of Rina and Noatak.'
After those words, the trial began.
Many witnesses testified in Nike's favour, including the president's wife. Buttercup emphasized how she would probably not be alive if it wasn't for the defendant and how she only used bloodbending as a last resort. This helped the necessity defence Nike's attorney was aiming for.
Mako, Bolin and Asami testified as well along with the Avatar. They were all favourable witnesses for Nike. Her teammates and Dane only said good things as well. Even when interrogated by the defence lawyer, none of Nike's friends spoke ill of her.
The hardest part was when Nike had to be interrogated by the defence attorney. It was clear that the formal-looking man did not want her to walk free.
'As I understand, you are the daughter of Noatak, correct?' the serious man started.
'Yes,' Nike replied.
'And your mother's name was Rina, correct?'
'Yes.'
'It has come to my knowledge that your mother, Rina, had a very unfortunate death. She passed while giving birth to you, right? '
'Yes.'
'And since your father wasn't present, you were raised by your maternal grandmother, am I right?' he asked with a small smirk
'Yes.'
Right after saying that word, Nike realized she had fallen into a trap. A trap specifically made to make her look evil.
'Do you mind sharing with this court who your maternal grandmother is, please,' the attorney did not ask, he demanded an answer.
