Inside Mishti's room, the air was tense, heavy with unsaid emotions. Mishti's hands were clenched into fists as she paced back and forth, her brows furrowed in frustration. She turned sharply toward Riya, her voice trembling with restrained anger.
"Did he force you, Riya?" Mishti's tone was sharp, almost accusing, her concern masked by her fury.
Riya's eyes widened as she looked up, her cheeks flushed. "No, Mishti," she whispered, her voice soft as she pouted and nervously tapped her index fingers together, avoiding eye contact. "I was the one who..." Her voice trailed off, her face burning with embarrassment.
Mishti froze, her jaw tightening as she tried to comprehend her friend's words. "What is wrong with you, Riya?" she snapped, her voice louder now. "Do you even know him? How could you do something so reckless?"
Riya's confusion turned into a defensive frown. "Mishti, I'm his colleague. I've worked with him for months. He called you his sister! How can you even think he—"
"Calling me his sister doesn't make it true, Riya!" Mishti interrupted, her voice breaking. She let out a bitter laugh, shaking her head as she ran her fingers through her hair. "Do you see us talking after my wedding? Do you see any sibling-like bond between us? He was just being polite. Maybe he felt sorry for me back then. And I respected him for that... but you—this—" Her voice faltered, replaced by a look of deep concern as she stared at Riya.
Riya sighed and stepped closer, placing her hands firmly on Mishti's shoulders. Her grip was gentle but steady as she forced Mishti to meet her gaze. "Mishti," she said softly, "I've thought about this. I've made my choice. I don't regret it, not one bit."
Mishti's eyes narrowed in disbelief, but Riya pressed on, her lips curving into a shy yet confident smile. "He didn't run, Mishti. He's here. He accepted me. Even after everything, even though we were drunk, he told me something..." She paused, her voice turning softer, almost dreamy. "'Once you touch me, there will be no one else but you in my life.' Do you understand what that means? That one line lit up my entire world. It gave me confidence I didn't know I had. I trust him, Mishti. So, please, stop worrying about me."
Mishti stared at Riya, her heart heavy as she listened to every word. Her friend's eyes sparkled with hope, her conviction unshaken. Mishti wanted to feel that kind of certainty, that unyielding faith. But instead, her mind was a storm.
She thought bitterly, What if I were like her? What if I had trusted my instincts instead of Raj? A shadow of regret clouded her face as memories of Raj's betrayal flooded back. It was my choice to be with him. He gave me this life, but at what cost?
"Mishti?" Riya's voice broke through her thoughts.
Mishti blinked and looked at her, forcing a weak smile. "Nothing," she murmured.
